The MEng Capstone project creates meaningful opportunities for students to get real world experience by partnering with leaders in industry.
Shreya Walavalkar, MEng '26 (MSE), and her team partnered with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to develop protective coatings for a flexible heat shield material.
“[We] worked with real mission timelines and objectives, which differed significantly from a typical school research project. Instead of focusing only on technical performance, the project also had to consider scalability, manufacturability, and the realities of carrying a mission from initial design to final implementation.”

Meet Capstone Team 22: Shaping the Future of Digital Building Platforms through Open Innovation — part of the UC Berkeley MEng Capstone Partnership Program. 👋
The aim was to develop a prototype, using Siemens data and real‑world constraints, that could track and reduce carbon emissions in buildings and be embedded into Siemens’ trademark digital building platform, Building X.
Through the Fung Institute Capstone Partnership Program, select industry partners work alongside Berkeley engineering graduate students for nine months — with dedicated support from faculty, career advisers, and our Chief Innovation and Learning Officer every step of the way.
Shoutout to Siemens for bringing this challenge to Berkeley. This is what happens when great engineering minds get to work on problems that matter.

"The most valuable part was the students’ perspective. We truly value their opinions—students today will be the CEOs, CFOs, and decision‑makers of tomorrow. For us, they’re a glimpse into the future."
Wise words from Inga Becker, R&D Strategy Professional at Siemens, reflecting on the capstone project they supported with a talented team of Berkeley MEng students. Thank you for your partnership!
