Berkeley China Summit 2021, taking place on November 12-13, will be held online and live-streamed with the world.
About this event
Berkeley China Summit (or “BCS”) , founded in 2016, is an annual conference held at UC Berkeley every fall, with the mission to highlight Berkeley‘s strengths and to encourage bilateral discussion and collaboration between the US and China. Over the past 5 years, we’ve invited over 100 high profile speakers, including Nobel Laureates, Turing Award Winners, business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and government officials.
We are excited to host this year’s summit online, where attendees can join our online discussions, or live-stream it from anywhere around the world. This gave us a great opportunity to involve speakers and audiences from broader geographic locations including both the US and China and all over the world, enabling even more bilateral discussions on business, technology, and culture.

2020 Berkeley China Summit (BCS) Keynote Speaker --- Rock Star Ex-Dean of Haas Rich Lyons
UC Berkeley’s 1st Chief Innovation & Entrepreneurship Officer
Who says all university top-dogs are serious academics?
Who says business schools are all about teaching you how to make money?
Berkeley’s guitar toting and song singing, could-have-been-a-rock-star Dean Rich Lyons decided to use culture to distinguish Berkeley’s Haas School of Business from other top-notch b-schools.
Lots of smart people apply to top business schools. But as a top business school, what kind of smart people do you want to attract and carry your school’s reputation out into the world? As the Dean of Berkeley’s Haas School of Business from 2008 to 2018, Rich Lyons sought to define a set of values and principles that embody the Berkeley-Haas culture and use that to attract like-minded smart people. He led a school-wide effort to create the four Defining Leadership Principles of: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. That culture now permeates Haas and its students and alumni. They in turn carry this culture to the business world and the world at large.
After his tenure as Dean of Haas, Rich Lyons took a break to be with family, play guitar and teach finance. Then in January of 2020, he became Berkeley’s first ever Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer, overseeing the development of campus-wide ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship, including patenting and technology licensing. Being a rock-star will have to wait a bit longer.
We are delighted to welcome Prof. Rich Lyons as one of our keynote speakers for BCS 2020. Rich received his BS in finance from Berkeley and PhD in economics from MIT. He was an assistant professor at Columbia Business School before joining the faculty at Berkeley-Haas in 1993. He served as acting Dean of Haas from 2004 to 2005, then took a leave from Berkeley to serve as Goldman Sachs’ Chief Learning Officer before returning to Haas to serve as Dean from 2008 to 2018.

2020 Berkeley China Summit (BCS) Keynote Speaker --- Dawn Tilbury
Head of National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate of Engineering
Who likes and funds quirky scientists like the fictional Sheldon Cooper on “The Big Bang Theory?”
Who likes and funds “useless knowledge?”
The answer to both questions is: the National Science Foundation (NSF).
NSF is an independent federal agency that funds scientists, engineers and students to do basic research, to pursue seemingly useless knowledge that forms the foundation of humanity’s advancement in technology. NSF funded researchers have won more than 236 Nobel Prizes. They developed carbon dating of ancient artifacts, decoded the genetics of viruses, created an entirely new state of matter, and made numerous other foundational discoveries that benefit humanity.
Popular culture celebrates “technology innovation” which is often application and marketization of basic research results. Without basic research, there would be nothing to apply or bring to market. NSF funded projects have no immediate application, yet it advances humanity’s understanding of science and the universe. Despite increasing nationalism in many arenas, international cooperation is encouraged in basic research so that scientists from around the world can jointly discover the secrets of our universe.
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Dawn Tilbury as one of our keynote speakers for BCS 2020. Dawn is the Head of NSF’s Directorate of Engineering, one of seven areas of research focus at NSF. She oversees 40% of federal funding for basic research in engineering at academic institutions, distributes about 1,600 research grants each year, and helps to advance NSF’s Ten Big Ideas including The Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier, the Quantum Leap, and NSF INCLUDES. Dawn received her PhD in EECS from UC Berkeley and is a professor of both mechanical and electrical engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where she shall return after her term at NSF.

2020 Berkeley China Summit (BCS)
Keynote Speaker --- Dr. Zhang Wenhong (张文宏)
“Dr. Fauci of China”
Professor and Head of the Center for Infectious Disease, Huashan Hospital in Shanghai
Just as Dr. Fauci does the straight talking about COVID-19 in the United States, Dr. Zhang Wenhong does it in China. Dubbed the Gatekeeper of Shanghai, Dr. Zhang led the team of experts that guided Shanghai, a mega-city with 30 million people, in its fight against COVID-19.
Dr. Zhang shot to fame and gained tens of millions of followers for his frank talk about the disease and for assigning communist party member doctors to the front-lines whether they liked it or not. Compared to empty rhetoric from the government, Dr. Zhang’s no-nonsense release of useful information, accompanied often with humorous quotes, made him into a beloved celebrity across China.
“If you don’t stop seeing your friends, you will see them again in the ICU.”
“You’re bored to death? Then you’re boring the virus to death too!”
“If doctors are the only soldiers in this war, then we’re sure to lose. From now on, everyone is a soldier, even if you’re staying at home.”
“When the curtain of this coronavirus epidemic falls, I will silently leave the stage and go back to reading in my corner.”
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Dr. Zhang Wenhong as one of our keynote speakers for Berkeley China Summit (BCS) 2020. Dr. Zhang is a graduate of Shanghai Medical University and has held visiting scholar and postdoctoral fellow positions at the University of Hong Kong, Harvard Medical School, and Illinois State University at Chicago.
