Out of thousands of proposals nationwide, the College of Chemistry was selected as one of just 278 teams awarded funding for groundbreaking research under the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission.

Professor John F. Hartwig, Dow Professor of Sustainable Chemistry, and his team will lead a project that uses artificial intelligence to solve chemistry's "small data" problem โ€“ a major bottleneck in designing better catalysts.

While standard AI usually fails when data is scarce, Professor Hartwig's approach combines two pretrained models: a large language model and a 3D quantum-physics model trained on more than 500 million calculations. This innovative framework will predict and design custom catalysts for industrial reactions using fewer lab measurements.

The result? Cleaner chemical reactions that require less energy to produce the plastics, fuels, and medicines our modern economy depends on. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Berkeley biochemist Melvin Calvin used carbon-14 to unlock the secrets of photosynthesis, mapping how plants convert light into carbohydrates. His discovery not only advanced our understanding of plant biology but also helped scientists improve crop yields around the world.

The work earned Calvin the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry โ€” another example of how Berkeley research transforms our world.

SURD provides students from populations typically underrepresented in chemistry and chemical engineering with hands-on research opportunities that will help shape their future careers.

This summer, we're hosting four students from HBCUs and three UC Berkeley transfer students for 10 weeks of intensive research and training. We're excited to support their growth as the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The LED UV lamps used to cure gel polish emit UVA light, which may increase skin cancer risk with repeated exposure. Alexander Katz in our CBE department developed Magan's HandShieldโ„ขโ€”a spray-on barrier designed to help protect skin from UVA during gel nail appointments without affecting the polish.

Professor Karthik Shekhar's research explores a fascinating question: How does biological electricity work in the body at the microscopic scale?

Electrical signals propagate within and between neurons to trigger sensations that underpin our behavior and thoughts. "We know something about what elements give rise to it," says Shekhar about bioelectricity, "but we don't fully understand the mechanism of how you go from those microscopic elements to the full macroscopic response."

The chemical engineer and neuroscientist recently received the Philomathia Prize to advance this groundbreaking research into the bioelectric basis of neural activityโ€”a project that emerged through conversations with his departmental colleague and co-investigator, Associate Professor Kranthi Mandadapu.

"I could not have imagined any other place than Berkeley to do this research," Shekhar said. "As long as you are working on something intellectually interesting, as long as you're doing technically rigorous work, you are given the freedom to pursue it."
