The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research combines two closely related professions concerned with the efficient operation of complex systems. The industrial engineering profession involves the design, organization, implementation, and economic operation of integrated production and service systems using people, materials, and equipment. Areas of application include not only

the basic manufacturing and high technology production processes essential to our economy, but also service organizations such as banks, health care facilities, libraries, and government agencies. Operations research emphasizes the basic understanding of the functioning of complex systems of technology and management through mathematical models for the purpose of predicting system behavior or optimizing system performance under economic and technological constraints. Our Faculty are world-renowned experts in many application areas, from semiconductor manufacturing to the design and deregulation of energy markets to supply chain management to robotics to discrete event simulation, and have made important advancements in the theory of operations research, in areas such as algorithm design, integer programming, non-linear programming, and stochastic modeling.

Some connections last long after graduation. 💙💛

For Coleman Fung, B.S. IEOR ’87, whose commitment to Berkeley would later include establishing the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership, one of the most meaningful parts of his UC Berkeley IEOR experience was the community: classmates who worked together, supported one another and became lifelong friends.

Decades later, those friendships are still going strong.

Who’s coming to UC Berkeley IEOR and why? Welcome back to our series introducing the newest members of the Berkeley IEOR graduate community!

Meet Yue Cui, a Class of 2027 MAnalytics student in Berkeley IEOR. Yue joins us from NYU, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Data Science. She was inspired to pursue graduate studies to strengthen her data, optimization, and decision-making skills in preparation for a dynamic career in analytics.

Q:What areas of IEOR are you most excited to explore?
A: financial systems and healthcare systems

Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of academics?
A: Outside of academics, I enjoy playing tennis, swimming, skiing, traveling, going to concerts, and playing the piano.

In our new video series, third-year Analytics undergraduate Annie Carasco Medina explores how industrial engineering and operations research can help solve real-world problems.

In this episode, Annie highlights discrete-event simulation, or DES—a powerful tool businesses can use to model customer flow, identify bottlenecks, improve staffing decisions, and reduce long wait times.

Berkeley IEOR students explore discrete-event simulation in courses such as INDENG 174: Simulation for Enterprise-Scale Systems and INDENG 231: Introduction to Data Modeling, Statistics, and System Simulation.

Who’s coming to UC Berkeley IEOR and why? Our series introducing the newest members of the Berkeley IEOR graduate community is back!

Meet Luna Zhou, a new Master of Engineering student in Berkeley IEOR, with a concentration in FinTech.

Q:What inspired you to pursue graduate studies in IEOR/analytics?
A: My business analytics background taught me to ask the right questions, but I realized purely descriptive tools weren't enough to solve large scale operational bottlenecks. I’m inspired to pursue IEOR because it provides the engineering backbone, such as optimization and stochastic modeling. I want to move beyond reporting insights to actually engineering robust, scalable systems that drive real-world decisions.

Q: What's an achievement or project you're proud of?
A: I was part of the John Purdue Club Project when I was an undergraduate. My team assisted John Purdue Club analyzing their fundraising potential in different areas, centered around Chicago. Our work was later featured in the Purdue Business Journal. It was a rewarding experience and a recognition of our team’s effort.

Who is coming to UC Berkeley IEOR, and why? Welcome back to our series introducing the newest members of the UC Berkeley IEOR graduate community. Our incoming class brings together talented students from around the world, including right here in the Golden State!

Meet Shubhra Singhal, who joins us from Eastvale, California, as a member of the Master of Analytics Class of 2027.

Q: What areas of IEOR are you most excited to explore?
A: I am most excited to explore data analysis and its applications in healthcare. With my background in bioengineering and research, I enjoy working with data to support better decisions. I am looking forward to learning new analytical tools and using them to solve real-world problems in healthcare and medical technology.

Q: What are some achievements and projects you are proud of?
A: Some achievements and projects I am proud of include graduating cm laude with a B.S. in Bioengineering, earning multiple academic scholarships, and completing a Kathak dance diploma after many years of training in the classical dance form.

I also spent two years conducting cardiovascular research focused on elastin degradation in the anterior mitral valve. This work led to both an honors thesis and a research poster, which I had the opportunity to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).

In addition, I worked on a senior design project that involved developing a bioprinter for BIPORE fabrication, combining engineering principles with healthcare applications. These experiences helped strengthen my skills in research, teamwork, and problem-solving while allowing me to pursue my interests in both healthcare and innovation.

Outside of academics, I served as the Vice President of Music Changing Lives, a community service club focused on using music to give back to the community. Through the organization, I volunteered at senior living facilities and participated in other service activities which helped bring engagement and connection to residents through music and performance.
