MICS students Brandon Tarca and Sash Upadhyaya are the minds behind "TrustLayer AI," the Chang Award-winning capstone project.

The project aims to read through chatbot prompts before submission, scan for sensitive information, and make decisions around content redaction in order to address this issue.

"The government actually can do things. It can deliver confidently, and it can deliver well."

Merici Vinton spent four years helping build and launch Direct File, the IRS's first free tax filing service. Her case study, ‘The Life and Death of Direct File,’ documents what it took to launch this popular tool, which served 400,000 Americans until DOGE shut it down in 2025.

Her case study, developed as part of UC Berkeley's Executive Fellowship in Applied Technology Policy with UC Berkeley's Goldman School of Public Policy, is a leadership playbook for political leaders and senior government executives to implement change.

Dr. Sayash Kapoor has been appointed as an assistant professor at the I School, starting in July 2027.

“I am excited about the School of Information’s commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and conducting research in the public sphere,” said Kapoor.
