Join us for a webinar on recent immigration updates for F/J international studetns on Friday, October 23 from 11 AM - 12 PM. BIO will provide an overview of current immigration updates impacting F-1 and J-1 international students including new proposed regulations and current litigation. This updates session will cover: 1) The proposed OPT Fee rule, 2) the court case related to the Elimination of Duration of Status rule and 3) the court case related to recent CPT policy. The landscape is changing quickly, and we’ll use this time to go over what’s happening now and recommended next steps in navigating changes and uncertain times.

This webinar is intended for F-1 & J-1 EAP and degree-seeking students ONLY, NOT for Faculty/Staff. This webinar will be recorded and sent to those registered.

Important Immigration Announcement: On Wednesday October 7, 2026 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a branch of the US Department of Homeland Security published in the Federal Register a new Proposed Optional Practical Training Fee Rule impacting students holding F-1 status.

This is a proposed rule and it is not currently in effect. F-1 students can continue to apply for OPT/STEM OPT based on current fees and processes.

On October 5, 2026, four major U.S. higher education organizations (NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the Association of American Universities, the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts) jointly sued the federal government (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice) in a Massachusetts federal court regarding recent policy guidance changes related to Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

This lawsuit claims that without prior notice or formal rulemaking, the new policy guidance significantly altered a federal policy framework that had been in place for over 35 years. The lawsuit acknowledges the impact and current consequences to students and campuses as well as long-term consequences for U.S. research, innovation, workforce development, and global competitiveness.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because the judge has not made a final decision yet, the new restrictive guidance is still active. For now, universities and international students must continue following ICE's August 2026 guidelines.
