Last week, we returned to Shorebird Park in Alameda for our annual SAC (Student Activities Committee) Day! The day is a well-deserved break from regular classes as students prepare for finals.

This year, students and staff held restorative workshops that included making art, reading, playing games, and ultimate. We ended the day with an epic water fight with sponges (cleaner and more eco-friendly than balloons), followed by our new tradition of treating our SAC leaders to a nice, relaxing dousing of ice water 🥶.

Thank you, SAC, for planning such a wonderful day!

Earlier this week, we held our annual Black History Month Workshop Day—a day when we pause regular classes to come together as a community to learn, create, and engage with Black history and its centrality to our world.

We began the day with a Community Engaged Learning Program lesson centered on local action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. From there, students and staff led engaging workshops exploring Black STEM excellence, photography from the Black Panther Party, food and cultural stereotyping (with ice cream making!), the five elements of hip hop, and film studies featuring Becoming, Summer of Soul, and Get Out.

We closed the day with an inspiring talk from civil rights icon and former Black Panther Party chairwoman Elaine Brown, who reflected on her journey and her continued commitment to activism today.
