Innovative Genomics Institute

Innovative Genomics Institute Using genome engineering to solve humanity’s greatest problems in health, climate & sustainable agriculture. UC Berkeley, UCSF, UC Davis, UC San Diego.

innovativegenomics.org The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is composed of diverse researchers with a powerful combined expertise. After the development of the CRISPR-Cas9 system for rewriting DNA, we realized the potential of applying this technology to solve some of humanity’s greatest problems. Our scientists conduct world-class research, driven by the real possibility to cure human disease,

end hunger, and protect the environment. In addition to our scientific efforts, the IGI is committed to advancing public understanding of genome engineering and providing resources for the broader community.

This summer, the UC-HBCU Rising Stars program hosted eight talented undergrads from HBCUs at IGI labs across the University of California where they learned cutting-edge genomic research techniques. At the end of the program, students presented their work at a showcase where IGI Founder & Chem Nobel Laureate Jennifer Doudna, CA Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, UC Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Studies Pamela Jennings, and Cal professor Tyrone Hayes gave the students words of wisdom and encouragement. We can't wait to see what these students do next! Learn more about the program here: https://ow.ly/EQOV50ZC5xJ

Out now in Nature, IGI researchers based at UCSF and the Gladstone Institutes use a new kind of screening and uncover two gene edits that could make more effective for solid tumors. This work was led by IGI postdoc Qi Liu (pictured) and IGI Investigators Julia Carnevale and Alex Marson. Learn more: https://ow.ly/3KYI50ZAFMp
