In February 1960, a girl stepped on a boy's foot at a Berkeley Hillel formal. He looked at her and said: you might as well dance with me now. They got married three months later and were together for nearly 60 years.

That boy and girl were Samantha Klein's grandparents.

Her great-grandmother may have been connected to Berkeley Hillel near its very founding. Her grandparents met there in 1960. And when Samantha got into UC Berkeley, her grandmother — recently widowed, living with the family during COVID — burst into tears.

She knew what Berkeley Hillel might mean for her granddaughter. She'd seen it before.

Samantha went. She got involved. And 62 years after her grandparents danced for the first time, she met her own partner at Berkeley Hillel.

Some places hold history in their walls. Berkeley Hillel holds generations.
