Just got my copy of Heron Beecham's Immortal Essence, Dao Bones, published by Three Pines Press. Very cool book. I wrote an endorsement for the back too, so check it out!

Just wrapped up the first of two Dragon Sword workshops this past Saturday.

We started the class discussing the history of the practice as well as its greater relevance to alchemy and exorcism.

Somehow, only one person was stabbed…

With nearly 20 people swinging swords around, the school would have been a bit cozy, so we moved next door to my student David's incredible space at Santa Cruz Maker Studios Studios. Plenty of room to train, and thankfully, far fewer opportunities for accidental impalement.

When we trained in Wudang, every Wednesday the entire school gathered for a formal performance. During these sessions, Shifu would scrutinize not only each class as a whole, but every individual student as well.

It had been many years since Okanagan Wudang and I had taken part in one of these performances. Returning this time, we decided that each of us would perform one of the three Dark Fist (玄功拳) routines as a kind of kungfu cornucopia. Simon, Brandi, and I performed Dark Fist 3, 2, and 1 respectively.

Thankfully, my student Xiaoxia Feng managed to capture it on video.

It was really special to spend time with so many of our kungfu brothers this trip. All of us trained together in Wudang years ago, coming up side by side through the same struggles and experiences. Opportunities to gather as such a large group are increasingly rare these days, which made this reunion all the more meaningful. What began as a shared training experience in the mountains has grown into a brotherhood that now spans multiple decades and continents.

What's fascinating is that only now, years later, many of us are beginning to step into our own as school owners, in Wudang and beyond. It's amazing to watch the next generation of the lineage taking root around the world.

We set out on something of a school tour, visiting as many of the new schools opened by our brothers and uncles in the area as time allowed. We couldn't make it to everyone this trip, but we were fortunate to share several meals together as a family.

The mountains may have scattered us across the world, but the brotherhood remains undiminished.

Back in April, my kung brother Okanagan Wudang and I returned to Esalen to teach our second Daoist Sleep Alchemy workshop. It was an absolute blast that an IG post could never hope to contain. Okanagan Wudang and I just returned from a return trip to Wudang. Housed in Wudang is this badass stature of Xuanwu called Crown Prince Sleeps on the Dragon Bed 太子臥龍床. The statue stands… or rather lies as reliquary for the following story:

A Wudang legend tells of a dragon that swallowed a magical golden child whose presence brought prosperity to the land. After being subdued by villagers, the dragon encountered the Crown Prince of the Jingle Kingdom (Xuanwu) on his journey to Wudang Mountain. Offered a chance at redemption, the dragon transformed itself into a bed and carried the future deity through forty-two years of cultivation.
