12th USC KSI Annual Graduate Symposium: Korea, East Asia, and/or Other Asian Diasporas
CALL FOR PAPERS AND DISCUSSANTS
PROPOSALS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH, 2023
The USC Korean Studies Institute is pleased to announce the call for papers and panel discussants for its 12th annual graduate student symposium. This symposium aims to professionalize graduate students, nurture their scholarship, and create interdisciplinary networks of Ph.D. students working on research related to Korea, East Asia, and/or Asian diasporas. The symposium provides students from various institutions with the chance to meet and share research in progress with their peers. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to engage with a faculty panel that will build their professional and research skills.
There is no specific theme for this conference and graduate students from any department and any university are encouraged to submit paper proposals or serve as discussants as we hope to achieve an interdisciplinary mix of research papers from both the social sciences and humanities. Papers that include Korea in a larger comparative or theoretical framework are especially encouraged but a focus on Korea is not required. This conference will take place in person and participants should note that we unfortunately do not offer any travel grants at this time.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Participants can take part in the symposium as a paper presenter and/or a panel discussant. Please indicate which role(s) you are applying for in your cover letter.
Applications should be submitted to [email protected] by Wednesday, November 15th, 2023. Authors of accepted proposals/discussant roles will be notified by December 1st, 2023.
For paper proposals: please e-mail your CV, a short cover letter, and 250-word abstract for the paper.
To apply as discussant: please submit your CV and short cover letter.
Completed papers must be submitted by Monday, January 22, 2024 for distribution to discussants.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Winner of The UC Berkeley Hong Yung Lee Book Award in Korean Studies
The Center for Korean Studies at UC Berkeley is honored to announce the 2023 winner of the UC Berkeley Hong Yung Lee Book Award in Korean Studies, "Language and Truth in North Korea" (University of Hawaii Press, 2021), by Professor Sonia Ryang (Rice University).
"Language and Truth in North Korea" makes a significant contribution to the expanding scholarship on North Korea. Prof. Ryang’s bracing methodology and innovative framework sets her treatise apart from the conventional approach to the country’s political culture. By focusing on the practice of language in various genres, performances, and registers, Prof. Ryang offers a distinct and imaginative interpretation of the workings of political cohesion: how state power is diffused and ingrained in the everyday linguistic tenor of life in North Korea. It also exemplifies admirable commitment to anthropological distance—a form of sincerity that is essential to cultural analysis.
The UC Berkeley Hong Yung Lee Book Award in Korean Studies and its $10,000 prize were created to support groundbreaking research and writing that seeks to further the field of Korean Studies. A ceremony to celebrate the award and Professor Ryang’s achievement will be held at UC Berkeley on February 2, 2024.
The Center for Korean Studies at UC Berkeley is deeply grateful to all the authors and publishers who participated in this round of competition. We will soon be making a separate announcement launching next year’s competition, which will be open to submissions of Korean Studies books published in 2022 and 2023.
