Former CRWS visiting scholar Balša Lubarda wrote for the EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation, a part of the European Commission, on whether far-right ecologism is being mainstreamed. “On the surface, it may seem unlikely that such mainstreaming will occur, especially as we often assume a collective awareness of the far-right agenda. Making this agenda visible can appear straightforward: all it seems to require is a careful process of ‘unmasking’ the overt or covert techniques of exclusion characteristic of the far right. Yet this approach carries its own risks. When exposure comes from a position of privilege, it can easily appear patronising. Seen this way, the real danger is not that we fail to expose the far right, but that we mistake exposure for victory.” The findings highlight a growing challenge: exposing harmful narratives is not enough. Preventing mainstreaming requires careful dialogue, attentive listening, and the co-creation of inclusive environmental futures that cannot be co-opted by those who weaponise fear.
HOME - Does far-right mainstreaming also happen in environmentalism? Mixed evidence for a bleak future
What once appeared to be a marginal intersection between far-right ideology and environmental activism is now showing clearer signs of mainstream diffusion. New research examining both party politics and activist ecosystems reveals how far-right narratives can quietly seep into broader discourse. Th...
