Pioneers in Engineering (PiE) is a student-run organization based in UC Berkeley that aims to encourage STEM higher education and lower barriers of entry to STEM experiences among students, especially those who are underrepresented ethnically and socioeconomically. This is currently done primarily through an annual low-budget high school robotics competition. The competition was founded and is str

The KRON 4 report is a perfect showcase of what our programs are all about. Pioneers in Engineering is about supporting and stepping in to mentor one another, embodied by the actions of San Leandro PiE grad and MIT student Martín Martínez, who came back to San Leandro to coach his team when he learned of the loss of longtime coach Mr. Nava. As Mr. Nava made clear in his commitment to his students, and we make clear, everyone should be welcome in robotics—regardless of their background and experience.

We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Nava for his contribution and dedication towards San Leandro High School and Pioneers in Engineering.

Our work together in the community PiE has created is meaningful, and it is our job as staff to ensure that PiE's programs will continue to inspire new communities of mentors, teachers, and students considering STEM across the Bay Area, just as we have for longtime contributors and PiE alumni.

More about PiE:
Interested in robotics, STEM education, or community engagement? Want to design, develop, and deploy systems that will be used by hundreds of students?

Pioneers in Engineering (PiE) is a nonprofit student group committed to making STEM education accessible to underrepresented students in the Bay Area. Our main project is an annual eight-week robotics competition for local underserved high schools, and it's only possible because students like you design, create, and lead all aspects of the competition—whether it’s building the kits, crafting the challenge, or running the workshops.

All majors, experience levels, and backgrounds are welcome! If you would like to learn more about what we do, email us at [email protected] or check out our website https://pioneers.berkeley.edu/.

We would like to thank every school that came out to UC Berkeley for Fall Competition 2021! It was a delight to finally be able to see everyone’s faces racing through the game field after 1.5 years of remote competition. We would also like to thank our sponsors: Texas Instruments, CoE Fund Allocation, Chen and Ho Charitable Fund to name a few. We would not have been able to hold our competition without their support.

Shout out to the winners of Fall Competition: Albany High School and Arroyo High School. They beat out the runner ups (Skyline and John Henry) by 18 seconds. Also congratulations to our runner ups Skyline and John Henry for putting up a good fight during the races and setting the all-time fastest time. All the school did great and we appreciate you all coming out to enjoy the competition.

Thank you to all the 60+ staff members that helped out during the competition. It was certainly a challenge to organize such a large event across various buildings (Cory, McCone, Soda, O’brien) after so much time spent away from our students.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Spring Comp 2022!!!!
