🌕 May’s Blue Moon is here!

Catch the second Full Moon of May shining bright this weekend. Peak illumination happens tonight, making this a skywatching moment you won’t want to miss.

Despite its name, the Moon won’t actually look blue! 💙 A “Blue Moon” is the name for the second full moon in a single month — something that doesn’t happen very often.

🌑 This Blue Moon is also a “Micromoon,” meaning the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth. Because of that, it may look a little smaller and dimmer than a normal full moon.

✨ Head outside after sunset, find a good view of the sky, and enjoy the glow!

It’s FOSS Fun Friday!

The sun is out, so take learning outside! ☀️ This activity gets students moving with a game of catch while investigating the forces at work when throwing and catching a ball. Talk about balanced and unbalanced forces while having fun at the park or playground! ⚾🌿

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity! 🌎🦋🌿

Encourage students to become community scientists with a mini bioblitz in their neighborhood or schoolyard. Go for a walk and see what plants, insects, birds, and other animals you can find nearby. Students can collect fallen leaves or acorns and document their discoveries by making a list, drawing what they see, or taking photos.

What kinds of plants and animals live in your schoolyard or neighborhood? Let us know in the comments! 👇

What’s the buzz about? 🐝

Today we celebrate World Bee Day by connecting learning from the FOSS Insects and Plants module to the real world. Students are observing firsthand how insects and plants depend on one another — and why pollinators matter to all of us. 🌼🌎
