Lim Guan Eng, Minister of Finance for Malaysia, who had been invited by the AMENA Center for Entrepreneurship and Development, addressed UC Berkeley students and faculty on the topic of “Industry 4.0 and the Extension of Malaysia’s Economic Success” at the Blum Center on October 18.
“It is always energizing to come to the San Francisco Bay Area and its universities,” said Eng in opening his address. “There is much to learn here.”

The AMENA Center is honored and excited to share that the University of Oman and the Science & Technology City Project (the University City Project) signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of California, Berkeley on Thursday last week to establish the first regional UC Berkeley-Powered Innovation Hub outside the United States.
This marks a milestone for both the AMENA Center and the Blum Center along their journey of empowering developing economics and the agents of change within them. The vision of the innovation hub is to "provide incubation and acceleration opportunities for start-ups and provide upskilling programs for employees from the public and private sector to equip them with 21st-century skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, critical thinking, intrapreneurship, and innovation. "

We are looking for year-long interns starting in November 2019! Join a team that has been equipping AMENA region students with innovative thinking and creative problem-solving skills for over half a decade. Conduct primary research with local experts on the socio-economic and environmental challenges besetting AMENA nations and generate policy recommendations based on their resolutions. Interns with the AMENA Center will help provide human capital development, advance a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, and produce academically rigorous policy oriented research.
There are currently AMENA Center internships available in the following departments:

On our Social Impact Panel, we are delighted to have Andi Trindle Mersch from Philz Coffee!
Andi Trindle Mersch is Director of Coffee and Sustainability with Philz Coffee. In this role, she oversees coffee sourcing and quality and newly leads companywide sustainability efforts. Prior to joining Philz in April 2014, Ms. Trindle Mersch held a variety of responsibilities throughout more than 25 years in the specialty coffee supply chain. She has published numerous trade journal articles and lectured nationally and internationally on many topics in the coffee sector and more recently in sustainability. She has also held a number of leadership roles within the broader specialty coffee industry, including serving on the former Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) board, the Roasters Guild (RG) Executive Council, and as Past President of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance. She is currently serving on the Food 4 Farmers Board of Directors.

John leads system level interaction design efforts on Wear OS. He formerly was lead designer on the news and search team at Facebook and formerly YouTube TV and other products at YouTube. He has been designing for 14 years and specializes in interaction design and emotive psychology.
He’s from Indiana and grew up mostly in Japan, NC, and Italy. He’s been designing since being inspired by grade school trip to Nintendo’s Kyoto HQ.
