Some seasons of leadership are measured in years. Others are measured in what they make possible.

On August 28, Dr. James E. Brenneman will step down as president of Berkeley School of Theology, concluding two full terms. He leaves an institution transformed: enrollment more than quadrupled, re-accreditation earned at the full ten-year term, and BST's first Spanish-language pathway now reaching from the BA-Equivalency through the Doctor of Ministry. Under his leadership, BST inaugurated the Center for Truth, Racial Healing, and Restorative Justice, launched the Arc Initiative for Asian American theological leadership, and today stands among the ten most interculturally diverse seminaries in the nation.

He would be the first to say none of it happened without struggle. He often returns to the image of Jacob wrestling through the night: tenacious, willing to be wounded in the striving, and stubbornly expectant of blessing. That is the character he left deeper in this school than he found it.

"Every leader has a kairos, a God-appointed time, and mine at BST has been fulfilled. It is time to pass the mantle, trusting that what comes next will be greater still. I leave with a full heart and an open hand, praying that BST's best and most fruitful days are yet to come."

Thank you, Dr. Brenneman. What has been formed here goes with you, and what you formed here remains.

📚 New book alert! Congratulations to BST Professor Dr. Hanna Kang on the release of Asian Latinxs, Mestizaje, and Intercultural Theology (Bloomsbury), centering the voices of Asian Latinxs in Latinx theology.

Tracing a history often left out of the conversation, Dr. Kang draws on the biblical stories of Hagar and Ruth to challenge racial divisions and offer a bold model for solidarity among minoritized communities.

August is National Make-a-Will Month, and it holds a quieter question than the name suggests: what do you hope will outlive you?

A will is more than a legal document. It is a way of caring for the people you love and naming the values you want to carry forward. For many in the BST community, those values include the formation of leaders for communities of faith, hope, and justice.

BST has partnered with FreeWill so that writing a legal will is simple, secure, and free: partner.freewill.com/bst. And for anyone curious what a legacy at BST could look like, our Planned Giving Guide walks through the options with care. You can find both at bst.edu/give-now/give-tomorrow.

Whatever you decide, this month is a good time to begin.

Faith that stays private asks little of us. Faith that walks into public life asks more: honesty about what is broken, courage to name it, and love strong enough to stay in the room.

At BST, formation happens at that intersection. Theology is not only studied here. It is asked to stand somewhere.

Where is your faith being asked to stand this season?

"Hide us behind the Cross." In the Black Church tradition, that prayer is a plea for protection, a shield for the vulnerable. It was never a place for the guilty to hide.

Dr. Joseph Evans, director of BST's Center for Truth, Racial Healing, and Restorative Justice, names what happens when faith becomes a mask: scripture bent into self-justification, and sacred symbols used to hide harm rather than heal it.

True faith, he writes, steps out from behind the mask, admits the reality of our social sins, and seeks a justice that does not hide from the truth but is set free by it.

There is space here for that kind of honesty.

Some questions are worth following wherever they lead. Race and society. Gender and faith. Public theology. Power and politics. Interreligious life.

The Master of Theological Studies is built around the questions that matter most to you. Fully online, 36 units, and shaped to fit a life already in motion. Here you enter a “world-house” of teaching and learning, alongside students from every habitable continent.

This is space to explore your calling on your own terms. There is room here for the questions you have been carrying.

The fall application deadline has been extended to July 31. Reach out to discuss your questions.

A new chapter, and a familiar face.

We are glad to share that Dr. Derek Doughty has been named Assistant Professor of Transformative Learning and Assessment at BST. An anthropologist by training, with more than a decade in higher education, he brings vision, imagination, and practical know-how to the work ahead.

His focus: expanding how and where BST teaches, through community-based digital learning that reaches across seminaries, denominations, and congregations.

Congratulations, Dr. Doughty. We are glad you are here.
