BUILD is one of the largest literacy tutoring programs in the East Bay. Through BUILD, over 350 Cal BUILD is supported by the Irene S.

BUILD mentors provide extra, individualized support to struggling readers so they can build the foundational reading skills needed to succeed in school. BUILD mentors work at all 11 public elementary schools in Berkeley, 8 Berkeley community organizations or summer programs, and 6 elementary schools in Oakland. Join the Build Literacy Mentors in working with the youth in helping them with their reading skills! You can either be paid through work study, earn units, or join as a volunteer. Being in October marks the month’s celebration of Filipino American History Month (FAHM)! This is a celebration in the first Filipino arrivals to the US in 1587. However, FAHM began around 1992 but wasn’t nationally recognized until 2009 by Congress. We are also still in Hispanic Heritage Month until the 15th. So please spend some time appreciating immigrants to this country and the diversity in our spaces !
