UC Berkeley Yongmudo Club teaches self-defense to the students, faculty, and community members of UC Berkeley.
History of Berkeley Yongmudo: In 1974 Dr. Ken Min started the Hapkido club to join the existing Kendo, Karate, Judo, and Korean Karate (later Taekwondo) clubs. This club has taught self-defense techniques and promoted the academic study of self-defense. Over the years, the club has changed names from Hapkido to Hankido and most recently Yongmudo. In a facility, our size, we can often leverage more traditional training techniques, like working in parallel. In this case, we’re drilling kicks while lined up in rows. This often gives students the ability to observe lots of different people around them and pick up tiny improvements to their techniques while getting a lot of reps in.

We often practice back falls while walking forward, but more commonly, you’ll be executing a back fall while being tripped. In this case, our students are practicing walking backwards and taking a back fall out of it.
