Camp Robot offers exciting projects that are designed to be engaging for your creative "novice" as well as your young "engineer". The goal of the camp is to introduce novel projects which are at once both fun for kids at different levels and ages while also delving into such concepts as introductory engineering, programming and systems design. Attendance at multiple camp sessions are encouraged as
we provide an exploration-positive, open ended learning environment where the longer a camper remains in camp the more advanced the project the camper can attempt -- the sky is the limit! For less hard core engineers -in- training, outdoor games as well as alternate activities are available in the afternoons. Picnic style 90 minute lunch at nearby Strawberry Creek Park will give campers time to stretch and relax. Fridays include field trips -- some science related -- and some in line with traditional day camps. Camp Robot strives to be all inclusive and affordable at $250 a week. The Arduino kits to be used during the camp sessions will be available for purchase at Al Lasher's, a local Berkeley electronics store located on University Ave., adjacent to Camp Robot. The kits purchased for the camp can be used and re-used for one or more weeks at Camp Robot. Camp Robot is located at the Lutheran Church-1744 University Ave, Berkeley. There is a parking lot for easy drop off and pick up. Camp Hours are 9 am-3 pm. Campers may be dropped off at 8:30 am for no additional charge. After care is available from 3-5:30 for an additional $100 per week. Please check the website for camp session weeks. While the Monday-Thursday schedule remains constant, Friday field trips vary and sometimes include an additional cost. Camp Robot is hosted by Cara Sperry and Zack Alexander. Cara Sperry an experienced educator, having worked with teens and adults as a technology counselor for many years and an award winning youth mentor, brings relevance and accessibility to the program by tailoring the curricula to appeal to a wide range of interests and abilities. Mother to two teenagers, Cara brings insight and compassion, as well as much needed humor, into the often stilted science oriented environment. Zack is a self-proclaimed science nerd, and Summa Cum Laude graduate of U.C. He is a father of two teenagers as well and, having struggled with summer camp costs for his own children as well as encountering issues with his child's learning differences, he envisioned an affordable STEM camp in a non-competitive and relaxed setting.
