Strengths-based thinking makes for better student-centered practices. A great reminder for looking at my new amazing students!

See the Strengths First. Always. 💖

In early childhood education, how we see a child shapes how they see themselves. This powerful quote reminds us:

“Supporting a child starts with seeing what is working… not what isn’t. Growth begins when we build from strengths, not deficits.”

Whether it’s through play-based learning, nature exploration, or creative expression, children thrive when we notice and nurture what lights them up. ✨

🌱 Instead of focusing on what a child can’t do yet, let’s:
✔ Celebrate their unique learning style
✔ Support them with sensory-rich, child-led invitations to play
✔ Encourage confidence by building on what they already know and love

From problem-solving in the block centre to making sense of the world through dramatic play, children are already capable learners. Our job is to recognize their potential and meet them with compassion, curiosity, and trust.

Let’s keep building classrooms — and homes — where every child feels seen, safe, and strong.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be the English Language Arts Teacher at the East Bay School across the street from UC Berkeley. I’m thrilled because the staff is aligned in using culturally relevant, experiential learning using Universal Design that accepts a neurodiverse community and is still about teaching students how to be humans in a politically charged world. Over the last few years ive been working more with Middle Schools so grades 6-8 will be a new adventure to teach.

I’m encouraged to put the skills of my 27 years in education as a lens to investigate how we lift outselves into rigor, perseverance, and grit when we know what we want. These are the skills I see myself needing as well. Teaching is a powerful place to be right now, and it is the greatest force of resistance I have in my power for positive change.

I'm excited to start working as an Educational Therapist for Learning Tree Coach working across the Bay Area in a week. My new role allows me to work with students, schools, and parents to meet academic goals in reading, writing, speaking, organizing themselves, and thinking critically, as well as specific subjects. After being in the field for 25 years, it's coming back to what I love the most- working with students in a mostly 1:1 format where a teacher can focus on teaching. It's very satisfying to design customized and effective solutions for struggling learners!

News Break: I’m now taking private students! Contact me if you’d like to investigate how to elevate your child’s reading over the summer! Today one of my students and I played vowel hopscotch instead of a drill with flash cards. Even my neighbors were drawn to it. Gamifying things makes learning a blast!

Library News: Children’s Fairyland in Oakland was graced by Library and Literacy Hero Mychal Threets! Mychal is an extremely positive believer that everyone can find more joy at the library. Do you agree??

We are spreading library joy with a shout out to Mychal Threets for ! 📚💖

During his visit to Oakland earlier this year, Mychal Threets (), California Librarian and literacy advocate, took a trip down memory lane at Fairyland. He spent a magical afternoon with our Fairyland Librarian, Angela Moffett, delighting in his love of reading and storytelling. 📖✨

Mychal, known for sharing adorable children's tales online, brings joy and affirmations to hearts nationwide. Mychal is a positive role model and his actions speak volumes: he won the 2024 I Love My Librarian Award, hosted the program that honored diversity within his local library, is now PBS' resident librarian, and continues to inspire minds as an incredible social media storyteller!

His belief that "library kids will save the world" is infectious, inspiring us all to embrace literacy and kindness. As we celebrate Children's Book Week, May 6 through May 12, let's recognize Mychal's unwavering dedication to spreading the love of reading.

Thank you, , for being a true literacy champion and positive influence in the world! Keep shining your light! ✨📚

What Is Translanguaging and How Is It Used in the Classroom? 09/28/2023

I’m curious if anyone out there uses Translanguaging regularly? After learning about it and getting coached at UC Berkeley, I really saw it as the ideal way to teach in CA especially. In this state we have so many students with expansive linguistic backgrounds that are asked to only use English in schools, when Translanguaging teaches the entire class vocabulary in multiple languages.

What do you think about this?

What Is Translanguaging and How Is It Used in the Classroom? Research into the best instructional approaches for students classified as English learners has pointed to the concept of translanguaging.

Alcatraz Swim for Sight 09/22/2023

Watching my former students blossom into fantastic humans is one of the rewards of being an educator. This news article shows how one of the students I worked on articulating thoughts and feelings for many years is applying his mastery in the world. He and his brother’s empathy and dedication to others are incredible for their young ages. The kids are alright.

Alcatraz Swim for Sight More than 285 million people in the world are visually impaired. But one organization is raising money to create a world where all can see. The annual "Alcatraz Swim for Sight" is happening this weekend to help raise funds for scientific and technological advancements that lead to solutions for pati...

In my new role I have the opportunity to coach teachers in the classroom and answer questions they have in reading instruction. Yesterday I was asked a question that shook me to my core, and it was from a teacher decades into their career.

“Why should I differentiate my teaching for the 2-3 kids that will just never get it?”

I’ve seen this attitude in action. I’ve seen the kids fall between the cracks, I’ve seen white teachers such as her be fine with reaching MOST of the class. Equity isn’t about mostly.

Talented teachers know how to design learning that is inclusive to every student and have carefully considered this when getting to know the identities of their community. Teaching is a very challenging job, and I’m glad to be able to support those in the trenches. We need to do better and can.
