Reflections from Surah Ghaffer with Shaykh Hamzah Abdul-Malik.

We have the honour of learning from Shaykh Hamzah in the Scripture Studies Program. He is an Islamic Studies Azhar graduate who has taught and studied Islam for 15 years. He memorized the Holy Quran and served as an education consultant and spiritual guide for Islamic schools in Georgia, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, and the Middle East.

He has a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies and Leadership from Bayan Claremont and is currently working on a Doctorate of Ministry at Bayan.

As an African-American, born and raised Muslim, he understands the unique religious and spiritual challenges facing American Muslims and has a passion for maintaining the intergenerational continuity of Islam. A visionary leader, Shaykh Hamzah co-founded Midtown Mosque in Memphis, Tennessee, to revitalize one of the most blighted areas in Memphis, creating a successful model of spiritual-based activism where sacred knowledge and application are cultivated together. He founded Miraaj Academy in 2017 to nurture Quranic understanding and leadership amongst Muslim youth.

We are honored to welcome Shaykh Hamzah Abdulmalik!

Fifteen years. Four countries. A lifetime of devotion to the sacred sciences.

Shaykh Hamzah was raised in the heart of the Masjid al-Islam community in New Haven, Connecticut, a foundation that would shape a remarkable journey of learning. He traveled to Tangiers, Morocco, where he completed his memorization of the Qur’ān, then to Damascus, Syria, spending five years at the Abu Noor Institute mastering classical Arabic, Islamic law, theology, and tajwīd. His path continued to Tarim, Yemen, where he studied fiqh and taṣawwuf at Dar al-Mustafa, and finally to Cairo, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Sharī’a from al-Azhar University, one of the oldest and most venerated institutions of Islamic learning in the world.

Shaykh Hamzah is perhaps most widely remembered for the profound honor of reciting Qur’ān at the Janazah of the legendary Muhammad Ali.

Today, he serves as the founder and Imam of the Midtown Mosque and Miraaj Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, and is a doctoral student at Bayan Islamic Graduate School specializing in leadership and the Qur’ān. He is the author of The Endless Banquet (vols. 1–3) and The Quran Code, and the creator of the online course Quranic Compass.

Pillars Seminary fills the gap between Madrasa and Maw’ida by teaching students how to approach difficult questions.

At Pillars Seminary, students do not only study what scholars concluded, they study how scholars reasoned. They engage the intellectual frameworks of the tradition: usul al-fiqh, logic, ethics, and disciplined reasoning.

These are the tools that allow a trained mind to approach difficult questions with clarity instead of a reaction.
