Betty T. Yee was elected State Controller in November 2014, following two terms of service on the California Board of Equalization. As Controller, she continues to serve the Board as its fifth voting member. Ms. Yee chairs the Franchise Tax Board and serves on the boards for the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and California State Teachers’
Retirement System (CalSTRS). These two pension funds have a combined portfolio of more than
$760 billion. Ms. Yee also serves on the Ceres Board of Directors, a nonprofit organization mobilizing many of the world’s largest investors to advance global sustainability and take stronger action on climate change.
As the state’s chief fiscal officer, Ms. Yee serves on dozens of boards and commissions with authority ranging from land management to crime victim compensation. As a member of the State Lands Commission, she helps provide stewardship of public-trust lands, waterways, industrial wharves, marine terminals, pipelines, and resources through economic development, protection, preservation, and restoration consistent with the state’s environmental needs.
Ms. Yee has 35 years of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance and tax policy. A native of San Francisco, she holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in public administration.

CivHacks is committed to making this experience welcoming for everyone, including beginners! This is why we would like to invite you to apply to join us as a beginner mentor. As a mentor, you will be getting a team of up to 4 beginners and you will help guide them through the process while getting a chance to compete for our top prizes! Mentors will introduce themselves and present any project ideas they have during the opening ceremony. That being said, you are not required to have a project idea. You may come in open ended and work with your team to create an idea! Feel free to read our previous post for more info on CivHacks!

Welcome to CivHacks! Over the span of 48 hours, CivHacks give you the opportunity to create new applications, websites or hardware projects. Our focus is on providing a welcoming, engaging and creative environment to support social good in tech culture. You will work either individually or in teams to help tackle civics and voter engagement at its intersection with technology. You may sign up with a team of up to 3 other people, as an individual, or indicate that you are interested in being placed in a team with someone else!
If you are new to hackathons or coding, our beginners track is the perfect place for you! As part of this track, you will be placed in a team and assigned a mentor who already has experience with hackathons and who will be able to guide you and your team through the process! Mentors will introduce themselves and present any ideas they have during the opening ceremony. You will be able to indicate your preferred mentor from there and we will do our best to place you in their group!
The top two winners from our regular and beginner tracks will receive the opportunity to present their final product to our special guest judge! They will provide you and your team with the guidance you need to take the project you have created and actually implement it into real life! We are so excited to see all the amazing projects you guys come up with!
