Got a teen or pre-teen who likes to argue? Who doesn’t? Well, presenting logical, cohesive arguments is a writing skill that students will use frequently throughout their school careers. How about turning it into a fun and lively family activity? Here’s a site with such a wide variety of controversial topics that there will surely be something of interest to everyone. Check out https://www.procon.org/ for topics and arguments for both sides, then engage in a friendly family debate. I often use this site to teach the skill of writing an argument (or persuasive) essay.

The transition to middle school presents an organizational challenge for many, if not most, students. Managing multiple classes and teachers is a new skill that students have to develop.
