With nearly 175 years behind it, Berea College knows well that a community’s history is its foundation. When the past is lost—when stories, people, and ways of life are forgotten—the future can feel impossible to imagine. Preserving that reservoir of tradition and memory is vital for a community, so that it may not only survive, but also thrive and prosper. For the past two years, a Berea initiative known as The FREE Zion Project has helped one small community in Meade County, Kentucky, to keep its legacy alive.

On the verge of dropping out in his first semester, Seth Lewis ’15 stayed because someone told him he mattered. That moment set him on a path from Berea’s work program to founding the Appalachian Student Union and, ultimately, returning home to help lift families out of generational poverty through Kentucky’s Ready to Work program.

Finding a way to fit into her community was challenging for Berea native, JoJo Wray ’04. Brushy Fork Leadership Institute of Berea College Summit created opportunities ranging from school visits and community cleanups to animal rescue and environmental advocacy, where she discovered a sense of belonging and a calling.

Berea College Student Craft and the College’s Woodworking School at Pine Croft have received part of a $10 million grant as part of a partnership between Etsy and the Center for Craft.

“Berea College is honored to be included in the first round of the Craft Catalyst Initiative,” said Aaron Beale, associate vice president of Berea College Student Craft. “This support will allow both Student Craft and Pine Croft to expand their reach and increase their impact on the regional and national craft conversation while continuing the College’s founding commitment to access and opportunity.”
