Berea College Black Music Ensemble

Berea College Black Music Ensemble The Black Music Ensemble is dedicated to the preservation and performance of African-American sacred music.

The repertoire will consist primarily of gospel and spiritual music as it is understood in its historical and social context. A Christian-based organization, this ensemble reflects Berea's great commitments of Christian expression and service by also providing an outlet through which students may express their faith and promote a divine spirit of community. In addition to presenting Fall and Sprin

g concerts on Berea's campus, the ensemble sings in local and neighboring communities. Just Some History
The Berea College Black Music Ensemble was organized during the fall of 1969 by a small group of black students on campus. Members of the Black Student Union, these students wanted to bring their religious culture to Berea, singing the Black spirituals and gospel music of their home churches, and sharing this music with the entire campus and community. With these ideas in mind the 1969 Black Ensemble was formed stating that its goals were to "supplement religious life on campus and give vent to Christian love through song".
