Congratulations to our African American Studies capstone students, who presented at the 50th National Council for Black Studies annual conference. Their panel, "Training for Frontlines: Scholars-in-training on African Indigeneity, Legal Paradoxes, Womanist Q***r Birth, and Diasporic Fashion," generated fruitful conversation on new horizons in Black Studies. We appreciate their scholarship, and look forward to everything these scholars-in-training contribute to the world!

What an incredible experience at the 2025 ASALH Annual Conference!

Dr. Jessica Klanderud led a thought -provoking roundtable on "Anti-Blackness and Passing" that sparked important conversations around biracial/mixed-race identities in the Black community today.

Also, huge congrats to 2025 AFR grad, Jayden Trawick-Junta, for presenting his research on the cultural influence of the Kansas City Monarchs. His work highlighted the impact of Black baseball on the integration of Major League Baseball and beyond.

Our AFR Department is extremely proud of these two! Such inspiring and important work!

These past weeks, students in the Intro to Africana Womanism course welcomed a special guest — Brydie Harris, the Director of Community Impact at a Louisville-based nonprofit.

Harris shared their experiences in community leadership and engaged students in a meaningful discussion about the real-world connections between Africana Womanism and grassroots activism. We enjoyed their presence and can’t wait to continue these conversations.
