Founded in 2016 the Smoky Mountain International Conducting Institute and Competition was founded with the sole purpose of providing conductors, of all level

s, with opportunities to help prepare them for their future as 21st century Maestros. Dwight Oltman has 44 years of experience teaching aspiring conductors at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland and has taught conducting workshops throughout the United States. His pedagogy is based on his work with two of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century--Pierre Monteux and Max Rudolf-- as well as the incredible wealth of knowledge and experience that he obtained over his career which has thus far spanned more than 50 years. At Baldwin Wallace he was the Music Director and conductor of the Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the famous Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival. In addition to his collegiate work he was Music Director and conductor of the Ohio Chamber Orchestra for 20 years, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Cleveland Ballet for 24 years, and Music Director of Ballet San Jose for 12 years. He has also conducted professional orchestras throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Maestro Oltman has a passion for sharing his knowledge with the next generation of conductors, whether they be at the beginning of their training or are already experienced professional conductors who want to be critiqued and guided to yet higher standards. Our competition was founded with the sole purpose of showcasing the best and brightest talent on a national and international level while also giving our conductors the opportunity to receive feedback from not only Maestro Oltman, but also from the orchestral musicians of the fully professional SMICI Chamber Orchestra. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: As the safety of our conductors, musicians, audience members, staff, and volunteers is of the utmost importance to us, it comes with great sorrow that we must announce that SMICI 2020 will be canceled due to concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The decision comes after carefully monitoring the situation over the past month. This also marks the first time since the founding of SMICI that a summer will pass without our institute welcoming talented conductors from around the world to grow while making beautiful music and lifelong connections.

We plan to reopen in 2021 and hope to see you in the mountains then.
