Our International Vulture Awareness Day event is approaching! Saturday 9/5, 10:00-12:00pm at the Pinnacles.

This photo is of two hooded vultures that our very own, Kayla, saw while in Kenya this summer. Hooded vultures are a part of the "Old World" (Asia, Africa, Europe) vulture Family Accipitridae while the "New World" (Americas) vultures are in Family Cathartidae.

Even though vultures fill the same niche--role in their ecosystems--worldwide, these families are actually not closely related biologically. They are an example of convergent evolution where unrelated species evolve separately but gain similar characteristics and fill similar niches.

This week is our lead-up to our celebration for International Vulture Awareness Day on September 5th, 10:00am-12:00pm. We'll be posting cool facts and debunking some myths about vultures--if you see them all, you might have a head start on the trivia questions we'll have at the event!

Today, we are highlighting the two vulture species we have in Kentucky: the turkey vulture and the black vulture. As you can see from the photo, they have a similar silhouette, but turkey vultures have white feathers along the length of their wings while black vultures only have white at the ends. Turkey vultures are also generally larger.

Young turkey vultures can have black heads, so they can get confused with black vultures. The white feathers will always tell!

Some highlights from our night hike last night! The rain earlier in the day seemed to encourage lots of wildlife to be moving about, especially (not pictured) toads!

Busy bees a-buzzin' this morning. Check out their pollen pants!

Pollen gets stuck to bees bodies as they drink the nectar from flowers. Then, they groom themselves which gathers it all in their "pollen basket" on their legs. As they move from flower to flower, that pollen gets left behind, giving the flowers the means to reproduce.

The process is more complex than this explanation; it involves electrical charges and bee's superpower senses. If you want to learn more, it's an amazing researching rabbit hole to fall down!

Last week, we enjoyed three mornings of storybook-themed fun with an amazing group of families! Using Winnie the Pooh, Frog and Toad, and Where the Wild Things Are as inspiration for nature-based activities, we got to explore imagination, creativity, and friendships while learning about the forest.
