Today marks the birthday of Joan Benesh, co-creator of Benesh Movement Notation.

Joan was a former principal dancer with the Sadlers Wells Ballet Company (later the Royal Ballet). Together with her husband, Rudolf, she developed Benesh Movement Notation to better record dance and choreography. In 1986, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Award, the RAD's highest honour, in recognition of her work.
