This question recently landed in our inbox, and we thought it was a great one to share with the rest of the class:
What happens to exposed tiles and Jokers when a hand is called dead?
It all comes down to timing.
Valid exposures made before the error stay on top of the rack, and their Jokers remain available for exchange.
The exposure that caused the dead hand goes back to the sloped part of the rack, including any Jokers. Those Jokers cannot be exchanged.
The easiest way to remember it:
Valid before the error = stays up
Part of the error = goes back to the slope
