Joker exchanges: the cause of at least 47% of all “wait, can I do that?” moments at the mahjong table. 😅

This one feels like it should be allowed, but it’s not.

If someone discards the exact tile that could replace an exposed joker, you cannot call that discard just to make the exchange.

You can call a discard to complete an exposure.
You can call a discard for mahjong.
But you cannot call a discard just to swap for a joker.

The joker exchange has to happen on your own turn, with the matching natural tile already in your hand.

So yes, if someone misses the exchange and tosses that tile? Tragic. Deeply painful to experience and witness.

But still just a discard.
