Happy New Year!
The kids have decided they want to do an art and artists study for the month of January (and maybe into February, depending on how interest goes and how deep we dive into each artist). In case you didn’t know, we have a “world-class art museum” right here in Bentonville! I’ll try to get you more details as I hammer out lesson plans, but we’ll definitely be talking about some of the artists whose work can be seen at Crystal Bridges, so a family field trip or two during the month would be a great idea to extend the learning. Unfortunately, although MANY of the artists have works in the Crystal Bridges collection, they’re not all currently on display. I’ll try to research and find out which ones are available to see now or offer alternatives (but If someone knows the museum well or is an art history major, I’d welcome an assist with that!) We’ll be learning about the artists, their styles and methods, and throwing in a lot of literacy, numeracy, science, and maybe some history.
As of right now, the artists who will for SURE be included, based on who I have books or other materials about, are as follows (in approximate groups by week)
Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois
Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Yayoi Kusama, Alexander Calder
Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet
Alma Thomas, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso
We’ll probably also talk about Keith Haring, Jackson Po***ck, Helen Frankenthaler, Norman Rockwell, Faith Ringgold, Georgia O’Keeffe . . . just not sure quite where they’ll fit in yet!
Roots and Wings Preschool
Foundations for today, potential for tomorrow We are a small kindergarten-preparation program run by a husband/wife team.
We provide a secure, loving place for your child to grow and develop; because of the small size of our program, we are able to provide individual attention for each child every day.

Happy New Year! Tournament of Roses Parade on the TV, black-eyed-peas and greens for luck (no pork this year, though!)—we’re ready for 2026!
Reminder: quarterly materials fee ($25) due now! Add to next tuition payment or make a separate payment if you haven’t already submitted it. Thanks!

It’s not quite the same as when I was a preschool-age kid at my grandma’s house, sitting in the floor of her sewing room while she hemmed or cut or pieced together an outfit for her or me. She kept her buttons in an empty cigar box (Grandpa smoked King Edwards Imperials, so my crayons and LOTS of odds and ends were stored in them!) and I was free to dig through them and sort and string them. But kids still love digging through buttons, finding matches, finding beautiful ones, finding their favorite colors. And, with the trays, they can make the round ones race!
Anyone else old enough to have played with Grandma’s button box? What are some of your childhood experiences that your kids might not have?

Hole punches, cellophane squares, and glue sticks make fun fine motor projects that look like Christmas lights!
If anyone uses a real tree or wreaths and has some trimmings, we’d love to have a few branches for crafting/ sensory activities!

We had some adventures with ginger today! Kids got to explore a chunk of ginger root (we even tasted a small slice!), tasted ginger tea, ate a ginger cookie, and tried ginger candy. They decided ginger is spicy but also sweet and a little like cinnamon with lemon. They said the root felt like a crocodile! It smelled spicy and like cinnamon and lemon and our sassafras tree. Then we had stir fry for lunch that included our ginger, and it tasted warm and spicy but not too spicy. Next week we’ll be exploring the “bread” part of gingerbread, and maybe trying a different kind of ginger cookie.
Here’s a song we sang to learn about different ways of using ginger, too—what are your favorite ways to use ginger?

Y’all! I’ve been telling the kids that the one chrysalis we had left was just not going to make it, but we hadn’t yet taken the tank down and cleared it out.
I was wrong! It’s clearly the wrong time of year for him, and he’s VERY small, so I doubt he’ll still be here Monday, but we’ll see!
You’re welcome! Turkey gobblers are coming home today!
If your child will not be at school this week, don’t forget to submit tuition on Venmo or drop it by tomorrow morning! Happy Thanksgiving!🦃
Any suggestions?
(Edited to paste in the following that it randomly DELETED from my post!!)
TL:DR: I need vegan crayons that don't break the bank!
Okay everyone--sourcing solutions for GOOD, but INEXPENSIVE crayons for kids! I'm not a fan of Rose Art or Cra Z Art textures, but that may be what I need to get. I've been a die-hard Crayola afficionado forever, BUT--I wrote to ask about mammal-derived ingredients in their crayons, and their response was that they have mammal-derived ingredients in "some" of their products, but they won't tell me which ones. They'll let their toxicologist tell my doctor if I let my doctor release medical information to them about what kind of allergy I have and what reaction I had.
Which suggests to me that there are MULTIPLE ingredients in MULTIPLE products that I could be reacting to, so I need to just divest of all my Crayola stuff and get new.
Kids got to talking about Santa and cookies at snack. I mentioned that Bird left salads or sandwiches some years out of concern for Santa’s health and nutrition. I’m sorry—your kids have really taken to the idea and are brainstorming things Santa might prefer to eat. I’m sure Santa still loves and appreciates cookies—if it comes up, set any boundaries you need to for your house! He’s got plenty of choices elsewhere!
