We love to see our 21st Century AERO after-school program up and running! Monday was the first day. This is part of a 3 year federal grant. A big shoutout to all our staff helping and our coordinator, Jenni Sizemore. The first hour is dedicated to academics—tutoring, homework, etc. The 2nd hour is our Explore hour. Today, students could choose between an art option or a STEM option.

This week was a hard one at South Marshall.

Our staff carried a lot of sadness as we grieved the loss of Mr. Robert, someone who was such a big part of our South Marshall family for so many years. But even in a hard week, our kids still needed us. They needed their teachers, their routines, their classrooms, their laughter, and all the things that make school feel like school.

And our staff kept showing up for them.

These pictures are just a glimpse of what was happening in our classrooms this week. Kids were reading, writing, creating, solving problems, working together, laughing, and learning. They kept working toward their Mission: Excellence, and the adults around them made sure they could.

There can be sadness and joy in the same week. We can miss someone terribly while still celebrating the really good things happening around us.

This week reminded me just how much heart lives inside this school. We love our kids, and no matter what kind of week we’re having, we keep showing up for them.

Mission: Excellence continues. ❤️

Today is a tough day, and there are many heavy hearts in our South Marshall family as we say goodbye to Mr. Robert Phillips.

For 20+ years, Mr. Robert worked for the Marshall County Schools. The majority of that time was at South Marshall Elementary as a custodian. But calling him our custodian doesn't really tell the story of who he was to our school.

Robert was one of a kind.

He was the laugh you could hear coming down the hallway. He was the joke you knew was coming, even if you weren't sure when. He loved to pester people, especially his "women," as he affectionately called the ladies he worked with every day. And if Robert was giving you a hard time, there was a pretty good chance it meant he liked you.

Most importantly, Mr. Robert loved the kids of South Marshall.

Over the years, generations of students grew up with Mr. Robert as part of their school experience. They talked to him, laughed with him, looked up to him, and knew he cared about them. Long after they left our hallways, so many former students still remembered Mr. Robert. That's a pretty special legacy.

Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated Robert's retirement. We knew we would miss seeing him every day, but we fully expected him to come back through those doors to visit, tell a story, pull a prank, or just give somebody a hard time. We never imagined we would be saying goodbye so soon.

Our school is better because Robert Phillips was part of it. There will always be stories that begin with, "Do you remember when Robert..." There will always be people who smile when they think about something he said or did. And there will always be a piece of Mr. Robert in the story of South Marshall Elementary.

Today, we ask that you keep Robert's children, grandchildren, sisters, and entire family in your thoughts and prayers. We also ask you to remember his South Marshall family as we grieve someone much more than a coworker to so many of us.

And if you have a favorite memory or story about Mr. Robert, please share it in the comments. We'd love for this post to become a collection of the laughs, stories, and memories that made Robert so special to so many people.

We will miss you, Mr. Robert. We will miss your laugh. We will miss your pranks. We will miss you giving us a hard time. And most of all, we'll just miss having you here.

Thank you for loving South Marshall and its kids for all these years.

Once a Sheriff, always a Sheriff. 💙🧡
