Joe Pattengill. Scott County, Missouri.

Joe Pattengill has come at farming from just about every side of it. He spent time in retail ag, then ran the Charleston potato operation for Black Gold Farms β€” one of the largest potato growers in the state. Then, in the early nineties, he did the thing a lot of farm kids mean to and never quite get back to: he came home, and took up running the family farm, Northcut Farms, himself.

That is a particular kind of pull β€” to know the whole business inside out, from the retail counter to the row, and still choose your own family's ground in the end. Northcut Farms has been his to run for more than thirty years now.

That is the kind of life Joe Craig made the Farm Project to set down. Joe Pattengill's portrait is in the archive now β€” a permanent record, and a legacy handed down β€” made by the hand of Joe Craig, the Master of Light.

If you or your family have worked the ground in Scott County or close by, there's a place for you in this. Add your name to the record at the link below, or in our bio: https://forms.gle/LLQvqQvKuVsPjnLB6

Nitrogen prices have risen more than 40% in recent months, causing many livestock producers to take a closer look at fall fertility decisions.

Research shows fall nitrogen applications can increase stockpiled tall fescue yields, but the return on investment depends on fertilizer costs, hay prices and growing conditions.
