It's been a wild first two weeks of school! We are doing art in the student's classrooms instead of the art room due to school COVID-19 guidelines and we are more limited in the art supplies we can use but this hasn't stopped us from making some amazing art!

Kindergarten drew some amazing stories about their adventures on a pirate island!

1st grade used "action lines" in their frog pond artworks.

2nd grade is learning about using different shapes in art with their living room design.

3rd grade finished their abstract line paintings!

4th grade finished their abstract overlap design and will be starting a portrait next week!

5th grade finished their positive/negative abstract drawing!

A big shout out and thank you to Salem's PTO! They are the BEST!!

It's time to name our Salem Artist of the Week! Rylan is a kindergartener and a very talented young artist! Throughout this year she has always been excited when coming to my class and making art. I could always count on her smile and her willingness to give it her all when making art. I am glad to see her continuing to be an excellent kindergarten artist at home. Here she is showing off one of her paintings. Congratulations Rylan!

It's time to name our Salem Artist of the Week! McKenzie is a fifth grade student that I have had the pleasure of teaching for many years! She is a kind hearted young lady who is always ready to volunteer to help out around the art room! She is also a very talented artist! She mastered the Origami paper crane in fourth grade and if it wasnt for our current learning from home situation I would have her be my teacher's aid when it comes to teaching that lesson again to this year's fourth graders! Here she is showing off her Zentangle design she did at home! My only regret is that, like all of my fifth grade students this year, I wont get to see her graduate in person and say goodbye as she moves on to bigger and better things in middle school! Congratulations McKenzie!!

It's time to name our Salem Artist of the Week! This student shows us that just because we aren't in the art classroom making art doesnt mean we are not still artists! Xenon is a kindergartner who has been excited about art since the first day of school. Here he is making his own version of Vincent Van Gogh's 'Starry Night.' This wasn't an assignment and he made it before we started our online learning from our homes...He just wanted to make some art! An amazing job by an amazing artist! Congratulations Xenon!

I wanted to share this video will all the students at Salem. This is a fun and educational video I made about a project I've been working on for the last month and a half...Mr. Sago has built a catapult! While it takes time to actually build something like this most of my time was spent preparing by doing lots of math! I had to not only make precise measurements but also do calculations on the weight, throwing angle, and desired range of the catapult on paper before I cut a single piece of wood! I was planning on bringing this to school and doing demonstrations on the playground but since that won't be happening this year this is the next best thing! I hope to bring this to school to show all our Salem Tigers next year!

Who needs math right? Well if you want to build a giant boulder throwing machine to knock down castle walls then math will be your friend!

Starting this week, art lessons will be posted on your homeroom teacher's Google classroom page. I have designed these lessons so you can use whatever paper and materials you have around the house. Please do not go out and buy art materials.
We may not be meeting in the art room but remember what I've always said: "No matter where you are or what you are doing, YOU ARE AN ARTIST!" I cant wait to see what our Salem artists create this week!

Due to the closure of Bryant Schools until Monday March 30th the Salem Art Show that was scheduled for March 19th has been canceled. Hopefully we can reschedule so everyone can see the amazing art these kids have made so far this year!

Volunteers Needed!

The Salem Art Show is coming up on Thursday March 19th from 4pm-6pm in the cafeteria. I need some volunteers to help hang student artworks. We will be hanging the artworks starting at 2pm and will only require about an hour of your time. Last year we were able to hang all the artworks in about 45 minutes with volunteers! If you are able please stop by and help turn our cafeteria into an art gallery! You can email me [email protected] if you can help out!

Thank you,
Glenn Sago
