Last Friday we started the Exploratory Wheel. Here are our 5th graders meeting and learning about Mr. Vincent, the artist who will be working with us for the next 5 weeks to paint a portrait of our town. You’ve probably seen Mr. Vincent’s amazing artwork around town…he’s the one who painted the Benicia mural on the side of SIPS, on First Street and the mural in the garden at Lucca. Can’t wait to see how our art turns out!

Another Team Challenge from the first week of school was a STEM challenge where we had to “Save Fred” We had to work with our team to get Fred from the bottom of his capsized boat into his life preserver- but we could only use a paper clip to do so.

Our next Team Challenge went along with our read aloud of “Mr. Peabody’s Apples” which taught us about the power of our words. We were reminded that it’s easy to say something unkind, much like it’s easy to squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube, but once you do, it’s not always possible to take those words back- just like it’s impossible to get ball of the toothpaste back into the tube. This year our goal is to use our words to build one another up rather than tear each other down

We started the day by getting to know Ms. Hughes through 6 Inference Bags she had created. We had to analyze the objects in each bag and try to decide what each object told us about her. This was then our very first homework assignment of the year and we enjoyed learning about each other through our classmates’ Inference Bags!
