Oregon Solar Car Team has gone through all the hoops and is checked in at Texas motor speedway! Working hard day and night in hot humid weather!
If you missed today’s car wash we’ll be here Saturday June 26th at shell gas station on 27th and highway 20!!
I got to spend a couple of hours with the team yesterday afternoon as they were working on the Solar Car. I was impressed with how well they all worked together and at skills they have. The amount of work that they have put into this is amazing and what they have accomplished is equally amazing. This is what S.T.E.M. is all about I felt a little bit jealous that they are able to work on this. I think that there is some very talented future engineers in this team.

The Oregon Solar Car Team is a HS team which builds carbon fiber solar powered cars from scratch & races them every year on NASCAR’s Texas Motor Speedway.

The Oregon Solar Car Team is a non-profit group of high school students that have built a solar car. We are the only team from Oregon, as matter of fact the only team from the Pacific Northwest. Our Team raced at the Solar Challenge in Texas last year, and this year we are fixing our car so it can work even better!

It’s been awhile! We have had to redo our whole electrical after the loss of past members. We have been teaching a lot of our younger members the electrical skills needed. We finally got a wheel in the car spinning again! Progress! Sometime life knocks you back a step and you have to just keep moving forward. Thanks for everyone supporting!

Update: First off, our team has done some amazing things this year and learned a ton of lifelong skills. As you know we traveled to the Texas Motor Speedway in hope of racing the car we have been working on for so long. Things don’t always go as planned and this year we just did not make the cut. We didn’t pass all the required tests to race. It was a amazing experience and our team learned a ton!! We had so much amazing help from @rahsgreenenergy @statenislandsolarcar these teams really made a great impact in our experience of the race. We stayed and watched the days of the race and are pumped to see what we can do between now and next years race!

Our mechanical team is finalizing a roll cage this week. Our schedules have gotten complicated due to Covid numbers spiking, so we can only have two people weld at a time. The financial and electrical teams are meeting via zoom. This is a change for us all, but excited to see how everything works out!

The mechanical team is doing a fantastic job prototyping the roll cage. Today we were able to put the top onto the solar car with the prototyped roll cage inside.

Humble Beginnings

The team was started in 2007 by Thomas Stueve, under the name Oregon High School Solar Car Team. The team has been fueled by dedicated and determined members since its inception. Since 2007, the team has built two solar-powered cars: Heliocentric and Heliocentric II. These cars have raced on the Texas Motor Speedway for the High School Solar Challenge 4 times in total. The team is now working on a third car called Lumidos, which will be created out of carbon fiber with forms from Stanford’s solar car, under our new name Oregon Solar Car Team.
