What is early literacy? Think of it like building a house. We work with your Pre-K (4-5 year old) child to build a strong foundation for success in school--with or without additional Pre-Kinder education. We find that building this foundation with our Early Literacy program is more effective than remodeling their educational "house" after schooling has begun. We encourage parents not to wait until there is a problem, but instead focus on the best way to guarantee strong literacy skills that will lead them to succeed in school from the very beginning. Sometimes kids work hard, yet don't see progress. Education becomes discouraging, and even embarrassing for them, and it's unnecessary! That's what BLC is here for...to unlock your child's potential so they can succeed in school and see the progress they make with each session, further motivating them to continue to learn and create a positive pathway for the rest of their education.

What is the relationship between letter reversals in children (writing letters backwards) and the Earth being flat 🌎? Scroll for answer.

If your child writes their letter backwards--as if looking in a mirror--the reason is not dyslexia or lack of letter formation education. Our visual system converts light and shadow into objects, but since objects turn and rotate, we are not born to interpret orientation. For example, a banana is the same to our visual system even if turned backwards. But letters are the exception! The mirror reflection of β€œp” is no longer a β€œp” but a β€œq.” And if we reflect it upside down it is a β€œd” and then left to right again it is a β€œb”. The reflection of a letter is not the same letter, but our visual system interprets these differences as atypical and unnatural, and therefore letter flipping is very common until we train our brains to see and accept those differences.

So, just like the Earth was interpreted as flat because that's how our eyes saw it, letters of the same shape are the same letter to children because that's what they see!

What is the difference between BLC and Preschool?

At BLC, our goal is create a foundation for reading, writing and spelling through personalized, early literacy-focused tutoring. While preschools will generally teach your pre-kinder child basic handwriting skills, the ABC's, and word memorization with some word blending, not all children will excel with this type of traditional literacy framework.

As a former teacher, Mike will work to create a foundation and understanding of word formation and the relationship between symbols and sounds for successful integration into kindergarten. Our programs require as little as 1 hour a week to have your child well on their way to reading!

My child flips their letters; does this mean they are dyslexic❓

Contrary to popular belief, letter flipping is very common in preschool and lower elementary students. The reason for letter flipping is our brains are not programmed to notice the direction in which a letter is facing, just the generic shape of the letter. So if you think about it, the letters p, q, d, and b all contain the same shape and young brains are not yet accustomed to noticing the difference.

However, if you child is still reversing their letters by third grade, you may want to consider some educational testing or an evaluation with a professional to see why the letter flipping/reversals are happening. BLC can help determine the cause and create an action plan--sometimes with just a few tips to exercise at home, and sometimes a more in depth approach--to help mediate the letter reversals.

1. Driving across town during busy holiday weekends. πŸš—
2. Baseball practice. ⚾️
3. A walk around the river trail. πŸ₯Ύ
4. Dinner at Red Robin. πŸ”
5. EARLY LITERACY. πŸ“•

Just an hour a week is all it takes to create a knowledge base for reading that your child will carry with them the rest of their life!!! And while an hour may seem like a large commitment, it's no longer than a practice, dinner or hike, and the results of this hour of your time will benefit your child for their rest of the life!

Spelling = Reading, but Reading 🚫= Spelling!!!

What does that mean? It means a strong speller tends to be a strong reader, but a strong reader does not necessarily correlate to a strong speller! Why? A good speller will better understand the correlation between letters (symbols) and sounds and turn those sounds into letters, whereas in reading, the relationship is reading symbols to create sounds. So don't skip that spelling test! While we heavily rely on spell check and other tools these days, a basic understanding of converting sounds to letters will dramatically improve your child's lifelong reading skills.
