Les Voyageurs French Language Village

Les Voyageurs French Language Village Les Voyageurs takes place at our own poste on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minn. There, you will take time to develop the skills needed to become a voyageur.

At Les Voyageurs, you become a voyageur as you canoe with your tent partners, learn to pitch a tent, split logs, cook over an open fire, paddle, tip and rescue a canoe, sing songs, learn jokes in French and more! You will find the life of a voyageur to be a busy and challenging one. Throughout the stay, you will concentrate on four main tasks of equal importance: speaking French, living in nature,

building a community and studying the history of the voyageurs. While at camp, you will practice canoeing skills and learn essential camping skills, including cooking over a fire. This summer, you can choose to attend a four-week high school credit program, or a two- or four-week enrichment session. All options provide immersion in French, learning about the historic culture of the French Voyageurs and building your outdoor and leadership skills.

As winter begins to fade and spring slowly takes hold, we find ourselves in a season of transition: longer days, thawing lakes, and the first signs of movement returning to the North Woods. It’s a time that has long marked new beginnings, especially for the voyageurs who once traveled these waterways.

In this month’s newsletter, you’ll learn about the history of the voyageurs and the journeys that began each spring, get a glimpse of what awaits at Les Voyageurs this summer, and find a seasonal recipe inspired by French Canadian tradition.

February at Les Voyageurs is a season of reflection and anticipation.

Families are looking ahead to summer plans. Alumni are remembering their brigades and canoe routes. And new villagers are beginning to imagine what it might feel like to paddle out onto the lake for the very first time.

In this issue, we’re sharing what parents tell us after their kids return from Les Voyageurs, inviting you to connect at an upcoming information meeting, celebrating our Minnesota home, and highlighting a recipe with deep cultural roots.

Is Les Voyageurs right for my child? 🛶

We hear this question every year — especially from parents of first-time campers.

Maybe your child has never been away from home.

Maybe they’re a little hesitant.

Maybe their French is “just okay”… or brand new.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

✨ First-time campers thrive here. From the moment they arrive, they’re welcomed into a brigade — a small group that becomes their built-in team.

✨ Hesitant kids often grow the most. Between shared meals, tâche time (our collaborative, music-filled daily responsibilities), camp life, and outdoor adventure, they’re never navigating things alone.

✨ You do not need to be fluent in French. Language is lived here — through cooking, canoeing, singing, and building real community. Campers use French for something meaningful, and that’s where the growth happens.

If your child is curious, creative, outdoor-loving, or simply ready for a meaningful challenge wrapped in belonging, Les Voyageurs might be exactly what they need.

Early registration by the end of February helps us plan trips, staff well, and build the strongest possible community for summer.

One of the first things every villager does at Les Voyageurs is choose a French name.

Some villagers carry the same name year after year, while others choose something new as they grow and change.

As we get closer to Nametag Day, we’re collecting stories about Les Voyageurs names — what you chose, why you chose it, and what it came to mean.

Alumni, staff, and current villagers: we’d love to hear your story.

New to Les Voyageurs? Choosing a French name is one of the first traditions that helps villagers feel at home.

What if this summer felt different?

At Les Voyageurs, we step away from the noise and into something deeper — French spoken around the table, paddle strokes in quiet water, dance parties during tâche (chores), and friendships built face to face.

If you’re ready for a summer like this, registration is open for summer 2026. We hope to see you there.

Les Voyageurs is more than a summer program. It’s shared work that turns into dance parties, wilderness trips that change how you see yourself, and memories that stick long after camp ends.

From tâche (chores) time to paddling the Boundary Waters, it’s all about learning, growing, and doing life together.

If you or your child are excited about Les Voyageurs, please register by the end of February. Your early commitment helps us build the best summer possible!

As winter settles in, it’s the perfect time to dream about summer adventures, new skills, and meaningful experiences in the great outdoors. ❄️🌲

In last month’s Les Voyageurs newsletter, we explore how learning French comes alive through canoeing quiet lakes, hiking forest trails, and building confidence through shared challenges and community. Why Learn French?

Learning French is about more than words — it’s about movement, exploration, and connection.

French opens doors across the world, from Europe to Africa to the Americas, and gives you the tools to communicate across cultures. It’s a language shaped by history, travel, and shared stories.

At Les Voyageurs, French is learned through experience. You speak it while paddling, portaging, problem-solving as a team, and gathering around the campfire at the end of the day. The language becomes part of every challenge and every shared success.

Whether you’re drawn to adventure, teamwork, or learning by doing, French at Les Voyageurs builds confidence, resilience, and a sense of possibility.

Learning French is learning how to explore the world — together. 🌲🔥
