☀️🐔 School might be out… but the Ag Department never really sleeps! 🌱😄

Summer is here, but our Ag students are still hard at work because hands-on learning doesn’t stop when the final bell rings — we’re committed to learning 365 days a year! 💙💛

This summer, students will be helping with:
🥚 Chicken chores — collecting eggs and making sure our flock is happy, healthy, and well-fed
🌿 Plant care — because vegetables don’t take summer vacation either!

Our raised beds are looking AMAZING with rhubarb and strawberries already growing strong 🍓, and we’ve also added containers full of:
🍅 Tomatoes
🌶️ Habanero peppers
🧅 Onions

The best part? Everything we harvest will be stored and used in our Foods classes next year! Nothing says “farm-to-table” quite like ingredients grown right here by our students. 😎🌱

🍎🌱 Mulch, Sweat & Apple Trees 🌱🍎

🍎☀️ It might be hot, summer break might be SO close we can taste the freedom… but the work around the Ag Department keeps rolling! 😄🌱

Today, our students headed out to mulch the apple orchard! Mulching helps retain moisture, reduce weeds, and keep our trees healthier during the hot summer months. 💪🌳

Good news — our apple trees are looking GREAT this year! We are still battling some pollination issues, but don’t worry… we plan to get to the ROOT of the problem. 😉🍎

Nothing says end-of-the-school-year vibes quite like sweating in the orchard with mulch in your shoes and dirt everywhere. Hands-on learning at its finest! 💙💛

🌳🐛 Spring Reminder — Check Your Apple Trees! 🐛🌳

It’s that time of year again… Tent Caterpillar season!

Tent caterpillars create silky web-like nests in tree branches and can quickly strip leaves from apple and other fruit trees. While one year of damage usually won’t kill a healthy tree, repeated defoliation can weaken the tree, reduce fruit production, and make it more vulnerable to disease and stress. Spring is the BEST time to look for them because the nests are small and easier to manage before the caterpillars spread and grow.

At North, we handle them the old-fashioned way — with manpower! 💪 Students inspect the orchard, remove the caterpillars, and collect them in buckets of soapy water.

🎓💙 Graduation Day 💙🎓

Agriculture classes tend to have two types of students — the ones who take a class, enjoy the experience, and move on… and the ones who stay. The students who fill their schedules with Ag classes year after year, who join FFA activities, competitions, and meetings, and somehow become part of the everyday routine of the program.

Those are the students who make graduation day especially hard.

Many of these seniors have been part of our program since they were freshmen. Over the years, we’ve spent countless hours together through classes, FFA events, competitions, fundraisers, conferences, and all the little moments in between. Somewhere along the way, students stop feeling like “just students” and start feeling more like family.

While we are incredibly proud of everything these graduates have accomplished and excited to see where life takes them next, it’s hard knowing we won’t get to see them every day anymore. To our seniors — thank you for the memories, the laughter, the hard work, and the impact you left on this program. Please keep in touch, and always remember that your Blue Thunder family will be cheering you on from the sidelines. 💙💛

🌱🌼 Blue Thunder Plant Sale = COMPLETE! 🌼🌱

A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and supported our Agriculture Department Plant Sale this year! 💙💛

We are excited to announce that we sold 429 plants and donated an additional 18 plants, bringing us to a total of 447 plants grown this season! 🎉

This year, we worked hard to improve our greenhouse operation and student learning experience by:
💧 Updating our automated watering systems
🌱 Utilizing plug trays to better protect young root systems
🔥 Adding more germination pads to improve and speed up germination rates

During the sale, students also used a new receipt system to track purchases. This allowed us to:
✔️ Record which plants sold the best for future planning
✔️ Speed up checkout lines
✔️ Give students hands-on sales and customer service experience

Events like this are more than just a plant sale — they help students build real-world communication, organization, and workplace skills they can use in future jobs and careers.

We are also hoping to expand our plant donations next year! 🌿 If anyone has contacts with local community gardens or organizations that could benefit from donated plants, please reach out to Mrs. Chambers — we would love to connect and continue growing our community impact. 💚

🌱 First Batch of Rhubarb! 🌱

We officially packaged our FIRST batch of rhubarb! 🎉

After giving our newly installed rhubarb plants a full year to get established, we are finally able to begin harvesting this season. Our plan is to harvest and freeze the rhubarb so our Foods Classes can use it in future cooking labs! 👩‍🍳🥧

We are excited to have our first batch stocked in the freezer and can’t wait to see how much our stash grows throughout the summer. Nothing better than students getting to use ingredients grown right here at school! 💙💛

AND all plants are being sold for $1 or less! 🙌

Our plant sale is more than just plants — it’s a service-learning project for our students. Service learning combines classroom education with community service, allowing students to apply the skills they learn in class to meet a real need in the community. Through this project, students gain hands-on experience in greenhouse management, plant care, customer service, and agricultural production while helping provide affordable plants to local families.

💙🌟 Benny is Retiring 🌟💙

As many of you know, the Agriculture classroom has had one very dedicated class member for the past 13 years. His name is Benny. He’s never late to class, always excited to see everyone, and aside from a few accidents on homework over the years, he’s managed to stay referral-free!

At 13 years old, Benny has seen countless students come through our program and has made many friends along the way.

After this school year, Benny will officially be retiring from classroom life. While this decision was not easy and definitely comes with some heartbreak, we know it is the best choice for Benny. The classroom truly will not feel the same without him.

Thank you all for helping make Benny such a special part of our Agriculture program over the years. Please feel free to share any pictures you might have with him!

🐂💙 Hands-On Learning in Animal Science! 💙🐂

Our Animal Science students recently had the chance to step into the boots of real producers by participating in a Mock Bull Auction — and things got competitive! 🔨

Before the auction, students spent time learning about EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) — which are tools producers use to predict how a bull’s offspring will perform for traits like growth, calving ease, and carcass quality.

Students were then given a real-world scenario:
🐄 A herd with specific strengths and weaknesses
💰 A budget between $8,000–$9,000
📖 A sale catalog full of potential bulls

Their job? Analyze the data, identify the herd’s needs, and select the best bull to improve those traits.

Then came auction day…

We were lucky to have Lyle Lee, a professional auctioneer, join us to run the sale! Students were bidding, competing, and strategizing to get the best value for their operation.

This experience gave students the opportunity to:
✔️ Apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting
✔️ Practice decision-making with a budget
✔️ Experience the fast-paced environment of a live auction

A HUGE thank you to Mr. Lee for taking the time to make this such an authentic and exciting experience. Students haven’t stopped talking about how much fun they had and how intense the bidding got! 😄

🌸💐 Floriculture + Service = A Perfect Combination! 💐🌸

Last week, our Agriculture Science students put their floriculture skills to the test by designing beautiful spring centerpieces! 🌿🌼

These arrangements will be donated to local nursing homes and assisted living facilities to help bring a little extra brightness and spring cheer to their residents. 💛

This activity is a great example of service learning, which means students are applying what they learn in the classroom to meet a real need in their community. Instead of just practicing design skills, students used those skills with a purpose: to give back, connect, and make a positive impact.

We’re proud of our students for not only growing their talents, but also using them to make someone else’s day a little brighter! 💙🌱
