September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and the education and resources promoted during this time are especially crucial for the construction industry. According to the Construction Industry Alliance for Su***de Prevention, "Statistically, construction occupations exhibit both the highest rate of su***de and the highest number of su***des across all occupational groups."
On Tuesday, more than 100 students from our CraftMasters Training Academy summer Construction Orientation Readiness Education (CORE) classes participated in an interactive group discussion focused on su***de awareness and prevention.
During the session, students were encouraged to make a personal commitment to support others by writing one promise they would make to help someone who may be struggling. These were then added to the Pledge Wall in the Academy.
CraftMasters staff also reviewed mental health statistics and led toolbox talks in both English and Spanish, covering topics including how to listen, recognizing warning signs, and how to start a conversation with someone who may need support. Students were also provided with a list of crisis resources and contacts they can turn to for help.
By creating space for open conversation and providing practical resources, CraftMasters Training Academy of ABC of Metro Washington continues to support the well-being of the next generation of construction professionals.
