The New World screwworm fly has been detected in Veracruz, Mexico, prompting the U.S. Department of Agriculture to suspend cattle, horse and bison imports from Mexico to prevent its spread. While the closest detection is still 700 miles away, it remains a growing concern across the southern U.S., as the screwworm can cause devastating losses in livestock and wildlife industries.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Texas A&M AgriLife Research have released an updated fact sheet to provide key information and prevention measures for dealing with the New World screwworm. The fly, which feeds on living tissue in open wounds, can affect livestock, wildlife and even pets or humans.
With the potential to cause losses of up to $11 billion in Texas alone, it is critical to monitor and report any infestations immediately. Read our fact sheet for more on how to identify, prevent and manage this serious threat: tx.ag/NewWorldScrewworm
