Today, several of our students attended a college fair hosted by the Rockford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. They were able to get information about a number of HBCUs and area schools. And it was great to see Help Yourself alum, Micheala Ward, representing her alma mater, Alabama State University!

Our Pre-Collegiate students had a lesson on what plants are safe to eat this past weekend. They also had the opportunity to make their own tea combinations and planted pinto beans or lentils to take home and grow! Thank you to Claire Milsted and her Botany class for providing this workshop!

Have you ever seen a plant and wondered if you could eat it? Or if you did eat it, what would happen? This monthโs faculty workshop will be led by Beloit College Professor, Dr. Claire Milsted, and her Botany class. Pre-collegiate students will explore edible plants, do a deep dive into edible vs. poisonous plants, make tea, and plant their very own plants to grow at home. Students should bring a phone or tablet for the activity. Lunch will be served.

At todayโs workshop, we learned about diabetes - what it is, how it works, who it affects most, and how to take steps to prevent Type 2. We were joined by Deanna Marie Harmon, a former HY parent, who shared her story of how she was diagnosed, her health scares, and her daily routine for managing it. We also learned about Armani Smithโs journey with her diagnosis and how she is coping as a young person managing such a serious condition. Afterwards, we walked the track to take the first steps toward prevention.
