Experts advocate for teachers-in-training to spend a full school year in the classroom, not just four months.nBelmont Day associate teachers spend two four-month residencies, one semester in each of two grades. Experts recommend structured coaching and feedback for new teachers. Most new teachers receive only three official observations and feedback in four months. Belmont Day associate teachers receive feedback every day from their cooperating teachers. Their on-site supervisor observes and gives written as well as oral feedback to them at least once a week. Teacher-training programs should use classroom teachers, not just university professors, for the bulk of the courses. The Belmont Day program provides school faculty and staff for over three-quarters of the graduate courses. More than twelve current Belmont Day faculty and staff teach associate teachers during the school year.
