When school spirit goes supersonic 💨

Union Local School District, a rural Ohio high school whose team is literally called "The Jets", just got the ultimate mascot upgrade: a retired U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16, now permanently mounted on an 18-foot pedestal on campus.

This didn't happen overnight. The campaign kicked off back in 2018, driven by an alumni group called the Union Local Afterburners Committee. By 2021, the USAF had agreed to the donation — the first time an F-16 had ever been approved for permanent display at a school — but it took until April 2026 for the jet to finally be installed.

Before arriving, the aircraft had to be demilitarized at Sheppard Air Force Base, with its engines and ejection seats removed. The community raised roughly $90,000 of a projected $125,000 cost, largely from alumni, and a local business donated a crane and crew to lift it into place.

As one committee member put it: "This is more than just a plane — it's a symbol of perseverance, patriotism, and pride."

Seven years of work. One legendary display.
