On a top floor fire, vertical ventilation should be mandatory. ESPECIALLY in attached dwellings.

There’s so much that goes into the proper cutting technique. However before we start cutting we have to get to the roof. Flat VS Peaked are two entirely different animals. From access, to egress, to moving in/on/around the roof itself.

We put a great emphasis in roof operations taught by those who have much operating experience in the topic.

Real Estate.

Fire showing is a GOOD thing. We know where it is and we know where to engage. The amazing thing about the fire fight is there’s a simplicity in movement of we choose the right opening to start extinguishment.

One of the main goals of an effective Engine Company is to take back ground from the fire. If fire meets us at the front door we need to meet it with a hose line. Open up, knock down, shut down, and get moving, then repeat.

The amazing thing about this is everyone else who’s arriving on the fire ground now knows where the Engine is & what they’re doing. FFs preforming other tasks now know to choose another entry mode that’s not stalling the fire fight. Searchers are the people on the Fire Ground that want to make entry opposite the fire so we can work our way towards the fire and then work our way back to the openings.

Chaos ensues due to a lack of understanding of proper entry and movement. If we all choose the same opening, that said opening is going to be clogged and clogged fast. It’s not that we’re avoiding each other, it’s the fact of simultaneous movement at different entry points.

Work smart. It pays off.

Reach.

Reach is required in places where we can’t get to the seat of the fire or the volume of fire requires it. It’s vital to all operating to have an understanding of how the fire travels and building construction reacts to it.

The reach a 2” 2 1/5” offers is an important part in cooling deflection in a Type II Non Combustible building. The fire mixed with the building materials are cooking up a collapse. The hose line is the only way to stop it.

The reach of that stream operating at the ceiling level to cool those open steel web bar joists is a must. Ceiling, then fire!

Flake Out / In Line

The opening we chose to make entry and start our movement towards the fire can make or break us. For one it needs to be clear and open, and remain open the entire time. Something like a screen door closing on hose line trying to move can truly work against the fire fight.

The best thing we can do as the Engine Company, specially the Nozzle FF is to ensure that hose line is set up to flow in the direction or and through the opening with ease.

When getting to the doorway, the first move should be is to look back to that hose line and visual inspect how it was deployed and make the needed adjustments immediately. Get it in line and moving.

At times the Nozzle FF can be a lonely spot due to others being committed to other tasks. It’s up to us to police our own line to ensure adequate movement.

The CAN is a mechanism of control.

The integrity of the door is our best friend and we follow the doors closure path.

Standing in front of the fire room with a can without door control can be catastrophic. One horizontal opening made while in the position can cause rapid growth and spread of free brining fire in our direction, rendering the can useless.
