Did you know that alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist Breezy Johnson is a WWU alum?

A speed-event specialist, Breezy won gold in the women’s downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics, becoming just the second U.S. woman to win and inspire the next generation of women in the sport.

A legacy of giving back.

Peter (’58) and Judith Hallson made the largest gift in WWU history with a remarkable $10.5 million planned gift that will establish Western’s first endowed deanship to support students, faculty, and research.

After earning a degree from Western and retiring from his career, Peter wanted to give back to the university that helped shape his journey. His experiences at Western and throughout his career inspired him to share his knowledge and resources to help create opportunities for future generations of students.

We’re deeply grateful to Peter and Judith not only for this generous gift, but for their decades worth of generosity and belief in Western’s future.

Curious where some of our students are exploring this summer? ✈️☀️

WWU students are making an impact around the world, gaining hands-on experience through unique internship opportunities in their fields.

Meet Humanities: History of Culture major Arin Stewart, Anthropology major Graham Boyd, and History and Public History minor Ackerman. From Washington state to Türkiye, these Vikings are expanding their knowledge, building professional experience, and representing WWU wherever they go.

From classmates to soulmates, John and Maggie McKinnon’s story began here ❤️

Their connection to Western started in the 1970s and continues to this day. Through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), they’ve chosen to invest in the university that brought them together.

Their generosity will help create opportunities for future generations of Western students to discover their own paths, and maybe even their own love story.

Celebrating a national honor for WWU’s Laddi Quintanilla!

Recent graduate of WWU’s College of the Environment has been named the Study Urban Planning Spring 2026 Student of the Quarter by the Associated Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP).

Out of more than 100 university departments and programs worldwide that offer degrees in urban and regional planning, Quintanilla is the first to be recognized in the organization’s new Student of the Quarter program.

Representatives from The Foundation for WWU & Alumni were on hand as WWU alumnus and military veteran Rafael Remis was laid to rest during a solemn ceremony at Tahoma National Cemetery in Covington, Washington.

A point of great personal pride, Remis served in four branches of the U.S. military over the course of his career: the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Through a generous estate gift, he established the Remis Scholarship Endowment Fund, which will provide annual scholarships for incoming Western students in perpetuity.

His lifetime of service to his country and to future Western students will continue to inspire and make a lasting difference for generations to come.
