Montessori Geography: Why We Start with Continents 🌍

In Montessori education, we begin with the big picture and gradually move toward the finer details. This mirrors how children naturally learn; by first grasping broad concepts before zooming in.

Starting with the continents gives children a global framework, helping them understand the vastness of the world before exploring countries, cities, local geography and home. It’s a journey from the macro to the micro, putting things into context.

Starting with continents helps children:

🌿 Develop spatial awareness on a global scale
🌿 Understand cultural diversity and human interconnectedness
🌿 Build a framework for exploring countries, landforms, and ecosystems
🌿 Foster curiosity about how people live across different environments
🌿 Understand where their own home fits within the world

Instead of zooming in on local geography first, Montessori flips the lens outward. Children are introduced to the continents as distinct, vibrant regions, each with their own climate, wildlife, traditions, and stories. This approach sparks wonder and lays the foundation for deeper learning.

Imagine a child tracing the outline of South America with their fingers, learning about the Amazon rainforest, and then connecting that to the concept of biodiversity. Or discovering that Antarctica isn’t just a frozen desert, it’s a place of scientific exploration and global cooperation.

🌱 Montessori geography is holistic. It’s not just about where things are it’s about why they matter, how they’re connected, and what they teach us about being citizens of the world.

By starting with continents, we give children a sense of scale, belonging, and responsibility. They begin to see that the world is vast, beautiful, and worth exploring, not just physically, but intellectually and emotionally 🌎💫
