Indigenous Studies Symposium is to honor the life and continue the work of one of the nation's foremost authors, scholars, and intellectuals who passed away on November 13, 2005. Throughout his life Deloria maintained ties with friends, tribes, and institutions in the Northwest. One of his final public appearances was as the plenary speaker at the Robert K. Thomas Symposium held in 2005 at Northwe

st Indian College. Following this event he expressed his desire to make the college the site of a yearly symposium in indigenous studies. It is with this mandate in mind that we not only seek to carry out his wishes, but also to name the symposium in his honor.

Important Seating Info for the Vine Deloria Jr. Indigenous Studies Symposium

We are so grateful for the overwhelming interest in this year’s Vine Deloria Jr. Indigenous Studies Symposium, happening May 22–23, 2025 at Northwest Indian College.

As a reminder, seating inside the Log Building is limited and, in keeping with the longhouse-style spirit and cultural protocols of the symposium, priority will be given to NWIC students, faculty, staff, and Lummi community members.

For all other attendees, an overflow seating area will be available where the full event will be presented via closed-circuit broadcast, so everyone can still participate and engage with the powerful presentations being shared.

Start time: 9:00 AM each day
Onsite check-in: Begins at 8:30 AM
Location: Log Building, NWIC campus
Lunch: Approx. 12:00–1:30 PM (times flow naturally with the program)

Volunteers will be onsite to help guide you through the check-in process and direct you to the appropriate seating area.

🌅 Announcement: 20th Annual Vine Deloria Jr. Indigenous Studies Symposium – 2025 🌅

We are excited to announce the 20th Annual Vine Deloria Jr. Indigenous Studies Symposium, taking place on May 22nd & 23rd, 2025 at Northwest Indian College! This milestone event honors not only Vine Deloria Jr.'s enduring legacy but also the dedicated efforts of those who helped start the symposium, including Steve Pavlik, the many committed organizers, speakers, and devoted attendees who have made this symposium a powerful platform for Indigenous knowledge and advocacy over the years.

This year’s theme, "The World We Used to Live In: Upholding Our Duty to Past and Future Generations in the Fight for Indigenous Sovereignty," reflects the profound contributions Vine Deloria Jr. made to Indigenous thought and activism. The theme book for this year is The World We Used to Live In, where Deloria’s exploration of Native knowledge, spirituality, and sovereignty continues to provide valuable lessons in understanding our past and future responsibilities as Indigenous peoples.

Join us as we celebrate two decades of meaningful discussions, knowledge sharing, and collective action. Our 2025 poster design draws inspiration from the original 2005 symposium cover, transitioning from the moonlit night of the past to the vibrant sunrise of today, symbolizing a new dawn of Indigenous empowerment and resilience. 🌄
