| Check out this really great parenting tip for managing challenging child behaviors from our friends at the Parenting Academy!
| Right from birth, kids learn new skills at a dizzying rate. Along with those new abilities, they also acquire the confidence to use them. As children get older, that confidence can be as important as the skills themselves. To thrive, kids need to trust in their own capabilities and know that they can handle it if they aren’t successful at something. It’s by experiencing mastery and rebounding from failure that they develop healthy self-confidence and resiliency.

Here are 12 ways you can set kids up to feel capable and get the most mileage out of their skills and talents from Child Mind Institute.

For more great tips and tools for raising confident, resilient children, we encourage you to join the Parenting Academy's Raising Resilient Children virtual seminar on November 4th at 5:30 PM. Register to attend by emailing [email protected].

| Let’s talk power struggles. Adults have them. Kids have them. We all have them. But here’s the deal… Kids brains are still under construction. They often can’t understand reasoning especially in a heightened state. But you? You are the calm confident leader. When you find yourself about to climb that escalation ladder, try out these strategies!

- COOL, CALM ENERGY: Step in and remove the unsafe item, no delays and no drama necessary.

- ACCEPT & ACKNOWLEDGE: ”You wanted to play with that.”

- BOUNDARY: ”I took it to keep you safe.” Don’t back down on the boundary.

- OK THE FEELING: ”It’s ok to feel sad or mad about it.”

If you need more support around responding to your child’s behaviors in developmentally appropriate ways, we are here to help! Register for one-on-one parent coaching sessions with a professional parent coach at www.parenting-academy.org.

| Behavior is how your child communicates what’s happening on the inside:
→ Fears of being without you.
→ The need to feel connection.
→ The desire to be capable and independent.
→ The list goes on!

When we look beyond a toddler's behavior and discover the driving force beneath, it creates connection and allows them to feel seen and heard. Showing a young child compassion during a hard moment isn’t spoiling them or reinforcing bad behavior. It’s actually the way that we show them our unconditional love!

There are some things that we can practice and remind ourselves of when faced with challenging behavior. The most important being, to never ignore our toddler. We can ignore the behavior, but not the child.

Our today is for parents of teens! Work with your teen on problem-solving skills. Prompt them to think about potentially risky situations in advance and discuss various choices and possible outcomes. As “what if” questions and have your teen come up with an action plan.

| Being a parent is hard. It is also hard being a toddler. Just do your best. That’s what counts! 💟

| Fact is… Kids have tantrums. Tantrums are an expression and off-loading of feelings and emotions when overwhelmed and unable to cope. Here are some tips from Transforming Toddlerhood with Devon Kuntzman for responding to tantrums in a developmentally appropriate way.

If you need more support around responding to your child’s behaviors in developmentally appropriate ways, we are here to help!
