Thank you to Deception Pass Foundation and Skagit Fisheries for collaborating with us this weekend on work parties! We had a wonderful time doing planting parties and camping in Deception Pass!

We were camping for 3 days so here’s a little recap of our days! Friday evening we watched the sunset over cranberry lake, had dinner, and sang songs and told ghost stories around the campfire. We spent Saturday volunteering at a skagit fisheries and deception pass foundation tree planting event and an additional two hours zoning and planting with deception pass foundation. The work consisted of planting a mix of wetland friendly trees And shrubs such as western red cedar, Douglas fir, cotton wood, and cranberry, in an old hayfield. Efforts were aimed around reducing the effects of eutrophication at Pass lake. We spent our lunch break picking apples and relaxing. After we were finished we headed out on a short hike along the water and returned for dinner and a campfire where we played games and roasted marshmallows.

We plan to have more trips in the Spring, if you are interested we would love for you to join us for weekly meetings and work parties!

Work party photos from the first and second work party this quarter! We were able to continue work on 2 different sites we have been maintaining and restoring at the Fairhaven cabin and the Arboretum entrance behind Miller Hall! The 2nd and 3rd slide show what the site looked like BEFORE we ever did any work and NOW what it looks like being maintained. Thank you to everyone who came and helped out in restoring our Arboretum; which helps native plants and animals to flourish without invasive plants outcompeting them for resources. As well as giving us a space all students can enjoy and take pride in!

We are excited to announce we are working with Deception Pass Foundation and Skagit Fisheries to do planting parties on a camping trip to Deception Pass!

The dates are October 9th-11th

During the planting parties gloves and tools for planting are provided. However we recommend bringing waterproof and sturdy shoes

This past weekend we celebrated Arboretum Day, a day full of restoration, collaboration, acknowledgment, friends, food, and joy. We had over 150 community members join us to celebrate the Arboretum.  

We want to thank all the amazing organizations and partners we had for this event. Especially thanking the Office of Tribal Relations at WWU and the Native American Student Union for hosting Arboretum Day at Lhaq ’temish-ew’xw e tse XwLemi’ the new House of Healing. We would also like to acknowledge that we gathered on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin, throughout the San Juan Islands and the North Cascades watershed, from time immemorial. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our Indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways. 

Thank you to the City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department for running the work party with us and coordinating almost 80 volunteers, removing 7 cubic yards of invasive plants, and 2 cubic yards of trash. We appreciate Mayor Kim Lund for stopping by the event andbeing part of the community. 

This event would not have been possible without the efforts of the community, from the amazing partners to the individuals who came and volunteered or took part in the festivities. We can’t thank everyone enough for creating a day full of hope.

Join the Ecological Restoration Club for Arboretum Day on Saturday, May 30th from 9am- 3:30pm at the new House of Healing at WWU, thank you to the Office of Tribal Relations for hosting us!

We have various events happening including:

Community Engagement with Local Organizations
Time: 9am-3pm
Come engage with Whatcom Land Trust, Whatcom Million Trees, City of Bellingham Parks, Salish Sea Guild, WWU Community Service Center, Students for Climate Action, and the Western Americana Music Group.

Guided Interpretive Hikes
Time: Departs every hour between 12 and 2pm
Duration: 45-60 minutes
There is a Geology-Based Hike, Ecology-Based Hike and Birdwatching Hike!

Arts and Crafts
Time: 12pm-3pm
Basket weaving, plant printing, coloring sheets.

Live Music
Music: 12pm-2pm featuring Western Americana Music Group (WAM)

Snacks
Lunch: 11:30-3pm
Common Threads Food Truck
First 150 people get free meals!
Snacks: bagels from Bagelry, Community Food Co-op goodies, granola bars, fruit snacks and fresh fruit!

Time: 3pm
Reflection and shared appreciation time of Sehome hill!

We have 2 awesome work parties happening this weekend in our community!

Image one is for the NSEA Potting Party 5/9 from 9am to 12pm. If you’re interest in that event please register at https://nsea.volunteerhub.com/account/signin. That way they can be prepared with the tools to bring!

For both work parties you should wear pants and a thicker shirt/long sleeve, with planting and clean-up there’s always a chance of getting dirty. The ERC hopes to see you this weekend!

The Larabee ROW (Right of Way) Spring Work Party is happening this Saturday, May 2nd from 10am to 1pm.
This will be the 6th project this year with the Happy Valley Neighborhood Association in order to support native hedgerow and pollinator mound. The area of ROW involved in the work party is a small water quality/ stormwater pond that inhabits lots of wildlife including bats, salamanders, frogs, ducks and many species of birds. We hope to see you this Saturday!
