We have 2 awesome work parties happening this weekend in our community!

Image one is for the NSEA Potting Party 5/9 from 9am to 12pm. If you’re interest in that event please register at https://nsea.volunteerhub.com/account/signin. That way they can be prepared with the tools to bring!

The second image is the COB Work Party to help clean-up Memorial Park! If you’re interested in going to that work party please use this registration link https://www.volunteerbellingham.org/need/detail/?need_id=1231970

For both work parties you should wear pants and a thicker shirt/long sleeve, with planting and clean-up there’s always a chance of getting dirty. The ERC hopes to see you this weekend!

The Larabee ROW (Right of Way) Spring Work Party is happening this Saturday, May 2nd from 10am to 1pm.
This will be the 6th project this year with the Happy Valley Neighborhood Association in order to support native hedgerow and pollinator mound. The area of ROW involved in the work party is a small water quality/ stormwater pond that inhabits lots of wildlife including bats, salamanders, frogs, ducks and many species of birds. On Friday we did restoration in the arboretum near the slab! We removed English ivy and trimmed Cherry Laurel. 22 volunteers helped us and were able to remove lots of trash as well (even an old empty pipe, slide 2). Thank you to everyone that participated! Our next work party will be off-campus and so make sure to sign up!

This Thursday, 4/16 from 5:30 to 6pm in ESCI 313, we are having Marco Hatch as our guest speaker!

Join us to learn about clam gardens and other forms of indigenous ecological stewardship and cultural restoration from Western’s own Marco Hatch (Samish Tribal Member). He will be talking about the ways that clam gardens are combining indigenous knowledge and western science! We hope to see you there!

This last Friday we had our work party at the Old Fairhaven Cabin again! We have been working on this site for a while pulling mostly English ivy. Friday we were able to lay mulch to prevent anymore ivy from growing and to stabilize the landscape. Thank you for everyone that participated and we hope to see you this Friday!

We are partnering with Larrabee State Park and the Northwest Strait Foundation for a work party at Clayton Beach, Larrabee State Park this Sunday 4/12 from 10am-2pm

This work party is apart of an ongoing Clayton Beach Restoration Project which includes 2 phases. The first phase is targeted towards removing invasive species to restore the eelgrass population and help to reduce erosion on the bluff due to wave energy. The second phase’s goal is to remove 1,300 linear feet of rock armor, pilings, and debris from the beach. Which starts with site recovery! That includes removing invasive species in the back-shore and planting native plants. Removing species is the back-shore is primarily what we will be doing at our work party this Sunday! Larrabee State Park will be generously giving all volunteers a free day parking pass and we will park at Lost Lake parking lot (anyone who has a discover pass please bring it).

We will have gloves and tools for all volunteers to use, however if you have your own leather gloves or loppers we would love for you to bring them! Also bring a water bottle and wear durable long sleeve pants/clothing because we will be working with blackberries that do contain thorns.

For our last party of winter quarter we revisited an old site behind miller hall that was cleared and replanted last year.

23 volunteers joined us in pulling up encroaching ivy and blackberry as well as tackling large patches of blackberry up the trail.

A big part of restoration is maintaining areas where previous work has been done. Consistent and repeated efforts are necessary for restoration to be effective.
